🏅 Nominations for the International Maritime Organization Honours for Exceptional Bravery at Sea are now open! IMO is currently accepting nominations for exceptional acts of bravery performed at sea during the period 1 March 2024 to 28 February 2025. The honours, which are awarded annually, provide international recognition to those who, at the risk of losing their own life, have performed acts of exceptional bravery in an attempt to save life at sea or prevent/mitigate damage to the marine environment. Such acts of bravery may also involve extraordinary seamanship skills in very difficult conditions or any other display of outstanding courage. In this 15-minute presentation, “Circular Economy Opportunities for the Maritime Industry”, Dewi Wesselman shares her expertise and explores the globally relevant topic of the circular economy and how it can benefit the maritime sector. 🟢 Background First, the concept of the circular economy and its relevance to the maritime and shipping industry are considered. Afterwards, the masterclass delves into practical strategies for implementing circular economy principles, such as smarter material use, extending product lifetimes, and designing for durability and modularity. The importance of considering the full lifecycle of vessels and the potential for circular business models is discussed. Additionally, challenges and opportunities are addressed in the design, building, operation, and end-of-life phases of vessels, advocating for a systemic change involving all stakeholders to achieve circularity in the maritime sector. 🟢 Biography Dewi Wesselman is Team Lead Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) at Damen Shipyards. Damen provides sustainable full-service maritime solutions with ambitions in circularity and zero-emission sailing. Dewi has been working for Damen since 2017, in multiple roles with her background in Strategic Product Design and Communication Design for Innovation at Delft University of Technology. During her studies, she learned a great deal about the circular economy, and she and her team focus on putting knowledge and experience into practice with projects related to ESG and circular economy, such as ship-as-a-service solutions and circular ship design.
