Across the world of work, discriminatory practices continue to keep #women in low paid, unsafe jobs with limited opportunities for growth and progression. By ratifying ILO C190, countries will be required to put in place laws and regulations that protect all workers from violence and harassment including #gender based violence and harassment. I've been thinking about purchasing practices recently. For as long as I've been doing this work it's been something discussed (anyone remember Women Working Worldwide's brilliant study done with Gap well over 15 years ago now? Or the Traidcraft/CIPS Taking the Lead: A Guide to More Responsible Procurement Practices back in 2008) but nothing really seems to be changing. Worth reading this interesting report from Better Buying "Fewer than half of suppliers (48.9%) reported that all orders are priced for compliant production (meaning that the prices paid covered everything the buyer was asking for and allowed the supplier to earn a profit). Of those in the majority whose total costs were not covered, more than eight out of 10 (81.9%) indicated that the prices paid by their buyer failed to cover basic production costs, including costs of raw materials, component parts, and labor for producing the order."

Northumbria University, in partnership with the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) and Women Working Worldwide (WWW), is inviting applications for a funded PhD position exploring the role of women’s organisations in promoting gender-just transitions through social dialogue in global food supply chains. This research will address key challenges in securing workers’ rights and advancing gender equity by examining: ·     Collective organising and advocacy led by women’s organisations ·     Historical and contemporary barriers to gender-just transitions ·     The lived experiences of women workers in the tea production and supply chain ·     Methodologies include archival research, stakeholder interviews, oral history interviews, and participatory photography. Location: Centre for Global Development, Northumbria University This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to impactful, interdisciplinary research at the intersection of development studies, labour geographies, and historical geographies. https://lnkd.in/eHz2HkZd
