We plant trees, build schools, facilitate education and support women's empowerment in rural Kenya.

About us

Word Forest is a Devon-based charity run by passionate environmentalists. It plants trees, builds schools, facilitates education and supports women's empowerment in rural Kenya. Aside from the building, it does much the same in the UK but on a smaller scale. It exists to mitigate climate breakdown by providing a raft of humanitarian support initiatives for the tree planting communities. To see Word Forest's positive impact in action, see their documentary, #TreesAreTheKey narrated by Kate Winslet at TreesAreTheKey.com

As 2024 comes to a close, we'd like to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. We couldn't do what we do without your kindness and generosity! Here are some of the numerous highlights of our year: - We founded a mens mental health and empowerment group - The Resilient Brothers 🙋🏿♂️ - Our Permaculture Teaching Centre was completed, including shade netting to protect saplings 🌱 - We launched our Bring and Share Vegan Lunch campaign to promote planet conscious eating and raise money for our cause 🍽️ - We gave talks and visited events all across the UK 📚 Your contributions, however small, have planted trees, empowered women and facilitated education programs throughout Kenya and we couldn't be more grateful! Happy New Year and we'll see you in 2025! The WF team x

  • Christmas in rural Kenya is a joyous occasion, marked by unique traditions, heartfelt gratitude, and a spirit of togetherness that brings communities closer. This article combines reflections from two distinct parts of Kenya - Garashi and Rusinga Island - to paint a vivid picture of how this special day is celebrated. Both contributions offer an authentic glimpse into the festive season as experienced by the Mothers of the Forest and their communities, supported by Word Forest. • In the heart of rural Kenya, a new movement is taking shape, aiming to build resilience and support among men who are facing unique challenges. The Resilient Brothers, founded as an initiative involving local men connected to the Word Forest Permaculture Teaching Centre, is a group committed to improving mental health, promoting community well-being and encouraging active environmental stewardship. Find out all about our wonderful new initiative in our latest article, available via the link below! https://lnkd.in/eewW_64w

  • As well as aiming high to mitigate our climate emergency, we’re also doing all we can to arm the leaders of the future with the information they need to make the best decisions possible. We’ve been working with Dr Fiona Whitehouse, Head of the Internship Office at the University of Oxford for the past few years. It has been a pleasure to offer their undergraduates a chunky range of internship opportunities that they can really sink their teeth into. Tracey made a short video testimonial for the Oxford Uni Careers Service to put on their website and you can watch it too via the link below! Dive into the amazing work our interns have carried out! https://lnkd.in/e8DZhCvB

  • Our wonderful friends at @phatpastyco have created a page o their website, detailing the work they do with us. Having planted over 24,000 trees and supported us in so much of our other work, they’re an invaluable cog in the machine. Their generosity is helping to reforest Kenya, one tree at a time. Check it out via the link below and learn more about what they do and how they contribute to our efforts! https://lnkd.in/e66gTdMF

  • Willows, also called sallows and osiers, make up the genus Salix. This includes around 400 species of deciduous trees and shrubs, five of which are native to the UK. Although they are relatively fast growing, they have a short lifespan and usually live for approximately 30 years. When you compare this to the yew where some specimens predate the roman invasion of Britain, we see the huge variation in the lifespans of the trees that inhabit our island!
