About us
Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) is the provider of acute hospital services to the people of the Wigan Borough and surrounding area. We provide district general hospital services for the local population of over 318,000. Our specialist orthopaedic services are offered to a much wider regional, national and international catchment area. There are 4,658 members of staff and over 500 volunteers who all play their part in delivering high quality, safe and effective patient care from the following sites: • Royal Albert Edward Infirmary – Our main district general hospital site, located in central Wigan that hosts our Accident and Emergency Department • Wrightington Hospital – A specialist centre of orthopaedic excellence • Leigh Infirmary – An outpatient, diagnostic and treatment centre • Thomas Linacre Centre – A dedicated outpatient centre in central Wigan • WWL Eye Unit – A specialist Ophthalmology unit at Boston House in central Wigan We continue to demonstrate considerable success in improving quality. Mission, Vision and Strategy Service quality remains a key factor that influences patient choice when selecting a care provider and is, therefore, vital to our continued success as a Trust. A heritage blue plaque for inspirational orthopaedic surgeon Professor Sir John Charnley has been unveiled at Wrightington Hospital. Professor Charnley was a consultant hip surgeon and in 1962 pioneered the first total hip replacement in, 62 years to the day Chief Finance Officer, Tabitha Gardner, said: "The development of his successful hip replacement and his dedication to improve the lives of patients is well documented and we continue to improve our knowledge and understanding of joint replacement through research and training at Wrightington Hospital."

New technology is being rolled out at several Greater Manchester NHS Trusts, by using AI technology to help doctors to detect diseases, including lung cancer, quicker. Phase 1, which will encompass GP chest X-rays, has now gone live at WWL. Dr Marc Williams, Consultant Radiologist here at WWL said: “We are excited to use this innovative technology at WWL to support patient care. “We hope it will help us to streamline the patient journey by allowing us to diagnose cancer more quickly. This will mean patients get a better experience and can begin treatment sooner which will hopefully lead to them having a better outcomes.” Read more: https://shorturl.at/vNqRe

VIPs and WWL staff were invited to the special event to celebrate the major investment into diagnostic services that will provide testing closer to home for the Leigh community.
