We are excited to introduce 'Scoping the "Maths Corps" in England', the second in our new series of reports exploring how to address systemic challenges and create opportunities to help more students excel in maths.  Authored by Adam Schaffer, and created in partnership with XTX Markets, this report develops the idea of a ‘Maths Corps’ – the diverse network of people who have the potential to deliver or support maths education activities for young people. Key insights from this report include:  1️⃣ There is a Maths Corps of c. 600,000 potential educators in England, which is distributed nationally but with hotspots in London and the South East. 2️⃣Only about 20% of this Maths Corps is currently engaged in maths education, but there is potential to grow this significantly. 3️⃣ The Maths Corps comprises six main groups, with high priorities for engagement including university students, current and former teachers, and private tutors.  This report is intended to spark questions and conversations about deploying the Maths Corps to give young people better access to maths excellence pathways. Read the full report via the link in the comments 👇 Stay tuned for more from our series as we continue to explore solutions for advancing maths education in England.

Last week, we welcomed 70 cycling enthusiasts for our annual Velodrome Challenge at the iconic Lee Valley Velopark.   So far, the event has raised an incredible £280,000, and counting, to help build the new Children’s Cancer Centre at Great Ormond Street Hospital.   A huge thank you to our sponsor XTX Markets and Freshfields and our event partners Santini and Precision Fuel & Hydration for making this unforgettable day happen.

We are excited to announce the launch of our first report on Exploring AI and EdTech in Maths Teaching 🎉 This report, authored by David Monis-Weston, is the result of over 100 interviews with teachers, maths specialists, technologists, researchers, and policymakers. Here are 5 key takeaways: 1️⃣ There is a strong case for EdTech that empowers maths teachers to teach whole classes – not just personalised learning. However, we need to address the issue of tech distracting or wasting time, and the challenges of school commissioning, deployment and maintenance of the infrastructure to make it work. 2️⃣ Generative AI shows promise in maths teaching, but it is still unclear where it can outperform current teaching methods in terms of reliability and accuracy, while being pedagogically sound. 3️⃣ To maximise EdTech’s impact in maths teaching, we need to better align technology, platforms, curricula, pedagogical guidance and teacher development. 4️⃣ More experimentation is needed to see how AI can help teachers make better use of their time and focus on what matters, including addressing workload issues and improving professional development. 5️⃣ Schools and teachers need better tools to choose effective EdTech, with clearer definitions of quality, reliability, learning science and impact and opportunity costs, and rapid evaluations that provide timely insights into the emerging technology. A big thank you to our partner, XTX Markets, for financially supporting this important work. We are excited to be coming together to explore how AI and EdTech can drive impactful change in maths education. Read the full report through the link in the comments 👇 This report is just the beginning. We are now diving deeper into the research to address the challenges we have uncovered. Stay tuned for more Purposeful Ventures reports in the maths space over the coming weeks.
