Working together to ensure our rivers thrive
About us
We are a registered charity working to enhance and protect the rivers of the Yorkshire Dales for the benefit of wildlife and people. We work in partnership with landowners, businesses, land managers and the public to care for the rivers, streams and catchments of the rivers Swale, Ure, Nidd, Wharfe and Ouse. We work on projects across our catchment ranging from natural flood management projects, habitat creation and education amongst many others. All of these projects are supported by volunteers who give their valuable time to help out with a range of activities including teaching, tree planting and surveying. We also offer corporate volunteer days where companies can come out into the countryside and get involved in environmental works that will benefit river health, flooding or biodiversity. Please get in touch if you would like to join us for a corporate day. Sign up to our e news at: www.ydrt.org.uk

Dip into our first blog post which follows our project manager for river enhancement, Sarah Lonsdale as she collects baseline data on the #water quality and #river health of How Stean Beck, a tributary of the River #Nidd that runs entirely through a remote farm in Upper #Nidderdale.

Great to have led on delivering this project for Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust to make a difference to water quality and biodiversity. The project has involved many different people and organisations including landowners, Environment Agency, Mining Remediation Authority, North Pennines National Landscape and TerrAffix Soil Solutions Ltd. Making a difference on the ground is what that gets me up in the morning so its nice to be able to take the time to reflect afterwards! https://lnkd.in/ges9nYE4

Despite the cold and wet our #volunteers have been out coppicing willow along a #river bank. The sheep had eaten the lower branches leaving the trees very top heavy. There was concern they would pull the bank down if they continued to grow. We used what we cut to make a dead #hedge as a barrier to stop the sheep doing the same again! Please get in touch if you'd like to get involved as a volunteer - see our website for details. #rivers #nature #wildlife #yorkshiredalesnationalpark

Working in partnership with #farmers, landowners and communities, our Natural Flood Management (NFM) efforts within the #Swale #Ure #Nidd and #Ouse #river catchments as part of the #Ousewem project aim to: mitigate flood risks; enhance biodiversity and improve land health. We are currently looking for farmers and landowners in the #Arkengarthdale #Masham #Bellerby #BishopMonkton #Appersett #Gayle #Hawes or #Hunton to join forces with us. If a project on your land is viable, we will co-design and lead the delivery of solutions backed by our partners at #NaturalEngland and the @YorkshireDalesNationalPark or #nidderdalenaturallandscape Email: ousewemdelivery@ydrt.co.uk

Proud to be a lead partner on this successful and innovative project! #rivers
We've helped to complete the latest phase of an innovative £900,000 project to limit heavy metals polluting rivers in Upper Teesdale. The creation of more than 3 hectares of vegetation plots above Middleton-in-Teesdale will limit heavy metals being washed out of abandoned mine sites next to Great Eggleshope Beck, Little Eggleshope Beck and Marl Beck – all tributaries of the River Tees. By encouraging new plants to grow, less rain water will wash over or filter into the mine waste, reducing erosion and the amount of heavy metals washed into the becks. The work was delivered as part of the North Pennines National Landscape, Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme, which aims to restore, expand and connect habitats and is funded primarily through The National Lottery Heritage Fund. This project to limit metals polluting rivers was led by the Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust and the Water and Abandoned Metal Mines (WAMM) programme, working with the Tees Rivers Trust. It is primarily funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) through the WAMM programme, a partnership with the Environment Agency and the Mining Remediation Authority. This project has been a great success for us - addressing the toxic legacy of metal mining pollution into water courses and #rivers through innovative vegetation planting techniques and re-profiling. The wetter winters and more frequent intense rainfall we are experiencing results in increased #flooding and more pollutants being washed off fields and roads in our #rivers and streams. We work in partnership with landowners, businesses, land managers and the public, to deliver projects to halt the catastrophic decline of the rivers, streams and catchments of the #Swale, #Ure, #Nidd, #Wharfe and #Ouse, to restore them as sources of pure, clean water, habitats for aquatic and other #wildlife and as havens for the public to enjoy.
