About us
YES is designed to develop business awareness and an understanding of entrepreneurship in postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers, technicians, early career academics or knowledge exchange. This goal is achieved through a competition in which those participating prepare a business plan for a hypothetical company. YES takes place in the Autumn of each year. There are challenges covering the full spectrum of academic disciplines from the medical and biological sciences to astronomy, physics, chemistry and engineering, social sciences, environmental sciences and the arts and humanities. YES23 is organised jointly by The University of Nottingham’s Haydn Green Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (HGI), the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), GlaxoSmithKline plc (GSK), Midlands Innovation - TALENT, Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst (SBC) and Syngenta. Meet the exceptional finalists from Durham University and Newcastle University - representing the NLD BBSRC DTP and the Medical Research Council DiMeN DTP – Team DiagnosTree! 🚀 Harnessing the power of knowledge, they've embarked on a mission to protect the timber, construction, paper industries, and the environment as a whole. #YES24 eco-visionaries! 🌍 #TeamDiagnosTree is pitching a tree-specific lateral flow device to rapidly detect the presence of disease-stemming fungi within trees. This enables the immediate detection and removal of hard-to-diagnose, infected trees to prevent mass spreading. Their proof of concept involves the detection of Conifer Root and Butt Rot that threatens conifer trees globally. On Wednesday, Campden BRI hosted our final #YES24 pitch day and oh what a day we had!!! We had the privilege of seeing eight innovative pitches addressing #food and #drink challenges. The ideas ranged from plastic reduction to the development of exciting, novel food products. Each team brought a unique perspective, highlighting creativity and a commitment to shaping a more sustainable future. 🥗🍓🥤 Our judges had a tough ask – Mike Adams, Lucy R Davies, Helen Fletcher, Rachel Ward, Emma Hanby, Mike Spurr (BSc FIFST), Matthew Walsh – but after much deliberation they selected Team Caffinity Biotech (University of Leeds) and Team Vitamize (Food Consortium CTP) to claim their places in the final! Huge congratulations to all involved. 🏆👏 Thanks to Mitch Lee 🧀, Alicia Graham, PhD and Arielle Torres for sharing your inspiring career journeys and some invaluable tips.
