🌍 Reflecting on the Natural Resources Forum at the London Stock Exchange: Can Profit and Sustainability Coexist? 🌳Attending the Natural Resources Forum brought to light the immense challenges and opportunities facing our path to a net-zero economy. John Gummer, Rt Hon The Lord Deben’s powerful message? Profitability and sustainability must work together—companies focused on the long term, like Coca-Cola, aim to thrive for another 125 years by balancing profit with environmental responsibility. ⛏️The stakes are high: the natural resources sector plays an outsized role in the energy transition. But with ambitious climate targets like the Paris Agreement at risk, we face a significant disconnect. To achieve a sustainable future, around 300 new projects for critical minerals (like lithium, copper, and cobalt) are needed in the next decade to fuel EVs and renewables. Yet, complex permitting, varied regulations, and the need for significant investments mean each project takes 16-18 years to come online. Other key takeaways: ⚖️ Geopolitics and Supply Chains: We’re in an “age of trouble and tension.” COVID exposed supply chain vulnerabilities, and climate change could exacerbate this further, with threats of “water wars” and biodiversity impacts, like Britain’s bumblebees losing their sense of smell due to rising temperatures leading to reduced pollination and affecting the overall animal food chain. ⚡ Urgent Need for Infrastructure: From securing grid connections for wind farms to building local capacity for critical minerals, policies and funding need to catch up to ensure a resilient, responsible supply chain. 💡Equally fascinating were on-the-ground conversations with talented mining talent such as Jerome Deroy and Hamza E. who were able to identify bottlenecks in the development of mining projects such as the lack of clear accessible data.
