🌍💊 Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week: Fighting the Silent Pandemic 💊🌍 This week marks Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week, a global initiative to shed light on one of the most urgent threats to public health today—antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR arises when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve to resist the drugs we use to treat them, making infections harder—and sometimes impossible—to cure. 🚨 Why should we care? Overuse and misuse of antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents have accelerated this phenomenon, leading to nearly 5 million deaths each year. If we don’t act now, by 2050, AMR could cause more deaths annually than cancer. It’s a problem that requires innovation, collaboration, and a global response. 💡 That's why we want to highlight some of our brilliant startups, who are at the forefront of facing this immense challenge: Zonova is pioneering new technology to address microbe growth on the surfaces of medical devices. 🌟 By reducing microbial growth on materials at high-risk infection sites, they support reduced need for prophylactic antibiotic use. 🐓 AGA2tech provides novel technologies replacing the need for antibiotics in animal husbandry. After extensive testing AGA2tech found a promising solution in precursor generated PAA/H2O2. I think one of the reasons the seriousness of the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis is so hard to convey is because there are SO many knock on effects, and everything is much more intertwined than we think. For example, here we delve into how the use and disposal of antibiotics contributes to biodiversity loss and pollution, and conversely how climate change drives the need for antibiotics which then worsens the AMR crisis.
