It was fantastic to see so many UK TMT colleagues this week at our quarterly TMT community event and spend some quality time again with EY alum, and now Director of Propositions and GTM for Sky Broadband and Mobile, Aman Bhatti 🌟 We kicked off with an insightful session from Douglas McCabe, CEO at Enders Analysis, who shared an in-depth update on macroeconomics and the state of the TMT industry. Telecoms companies are facing immense pressure to reinvent their business models as returns on invested capital have sharply declined over the past decade. According to PwC's Global Telecom Outlook report, the industry is entering a phase of muted revenue growth and optimization opportunities, making it harder to earn back the cost of capital. To address this, telecom companies are embracing new business models, such as anything-as-a-service (XaaS) providers and network orchestrators, to fundamentally change how they create value, serve customers, and offer new products or services.

Simon Henderson, Mohit Wadan, and Fritz Jaeger from Bain's Performance Improvement and Accelerated Transformation team led an insightful session, discussing six key features for success. Our annual study on AI@Work has just been released, revealing interesting findings about AI adoption in the UK and other countries. We surveyed over 13,000 front-line workers, managers and business leaders across 15 countries and regions, and the results show a significant AI gap emerging in the UK between corporate leaders and frontline workers. 83% of UK business leaders now regularly use GenAI in their jobs, indicating a strong uptake at the leadership level. In contrast, only 30% of UK frontline workers regularly use GenAI at work, much lower than the 43% global average. 21% of frontline workers in the UK feel they are receiving the necessary AI training, which is significantly lower than the EU and global average. The findings indicate that the UK ranks among the least confident countries in implementing AI at work, ahead of only the US, Belgium, Netherlands and Japan. While those who are using AI in the UK report substantial benefits – such as saving time (81% of UK respondents), increasing speed (81%), being able to focus on more strategic work (78%), reducing admin (77%) and improving work quality (75%) – there is a clear disparity in training and adoption between different levels within organisations. Despite this training gap, UK workers exhibit more optimism about their jobs not being replaced as a result of the development of AI and GenAI compared to their EU counterparts. However, a significant 75% still believe that AI will profoundly change their roles, underscoring the need for better training and support to help workers adapt. One of the biggest risks in harnessing the power of AI is overlooking the ‘people’ elements. Our work with clients indicates that this is where 70% of the focus and effort is needed, compared to 20% on the Technology and IT and 10% on the Algorithms. Under-estimating the need for upskilling and highly-targeted change management to drive adoption of new tools and ways of working can really limit success. Capturing the full value of AI means enhancing capabilities beyond just technology.     This chart shows six areas for organisations to master to lead the way on AI-enabled transformations. We’re finding that a subset of these is no longer enough to be successful.     What’s more, the later that organisations start, the bigger the gap that they have to close on their competitors. The UK economy could have more to gain from #GenerativeAI than any other advanced nation, new research has found. The opportunity to boost productivity is greatest in the public sector, where a doctor could save up to five working hours a week, according to estimates by Accenture UK & Ireland.
