Events and Meetups This is currently what brings the most profitable connections, and personal meetings make a much greater impact than online discussions. What is the magic in meetups? Just imagine everyone there is your potential customer—a person who provides feedback if you ask about whatever you’re doing, and true relationships start from real-life meetings. The key is that 90% of people at these meetups are your target audience. If it’s a big meetup with 500-1000 people, you’re looking at a 25-30% conversion rate if your product and reputation are solid. What the numbers say: The number of IPOs decreased by 21.2% to 67, while the amount raised from public listings fell 53.3% to $1.4B. The IPO market for Southeast Asia has continued to spiral since the second half of 2022. What happened: Macroeconomic factors, including geopolitical instability and high interest rates, have dampened investor sentiment. Investors are now prioritizing proven profitability and sustainable cash flows over growth-at-all-cost models. Despite the current downturn, Deloitte anticipates potential improvement beyond 2024 due to the anticipated drop in interest rates and a projected wave of AI-related IPOs in the coming years. Relevance: Indonesia, previously the region's top IPO market, saw the most dramatic decline. Its market capitalization for new listings fell 92.2% to $1.22B, with IPO proceeds dropping 89.1% to just $248B. The number of listings decreased by 43.2% to 25.

Femtech has been in the headlines this week, as London-based Flo Health cracked a US$1 billion valuation following its US$200m Series C raise backed by General Atlantic – making it Europe’s first femtech company to achieve unicorn status. This has been controversial news on two fronts. First, the news that first place was taken out by a women’s health app run by an all male founding team, which stands in stark relief to the lack of capital going to women-led businesses - with only 2-4% of VC funding going to women-led companies. Second, Flo is still facing an ongoing Canadian class action claiming that it shared intimate health information – including details about users’ menstrual cycles, pregnancies and sex lives – to companies like Facebook, without their knowledge (and it’s not the first time, either - links in comments). This reflects consumers’ very real concerns about data, safety and trust when accessing essential health care that touches on highly personal aspects of our lives. In my favourite conversation yet, Rachel Yang and I recently sat down with Ida Tin, Danish entrepreneur, author and co-founder of the pioneering menstruation tracking app Clue, who coined the term ‘femtech’ back in 2016, to discuss the intersection of data, power and trust. Some highlights from our conversation? Although funding levels into femtech are not nearly as high as we’d like to see, Ida shared that the sector has evolved dramatically since she started Clue over a decade ago. We’re no longer faced with the barrier that women’s health is a niche area, and this shift has encouraged more women founders to start businesses solving the problems they themselves face. That said, there’s still a long way to go in terms of investors believing the scale of these problems and not subjecting women and gender diverse founders to a higher bar. Femtech solutions like Clue go a long way to addressing inequity in health care by empowering people with menstrual cycles with their health data in three ways – to give you the data to know when something isn’t right with your health, to help collect data to share with your doctor to help your experience carry more weight (although it shouldn’t have to be this way!), and helping healthcare providers connect broader datasets to identify key diagnostic gaps. In the post-Roe v Wade world, transparency on data privacy in the femtech space is more concerning than ever – and the risk here really comes down to the ethics of the people making decisions. Consumers are scared of data leaks and tech companies misusing their trust. Against this backdrop, data regulation in the health space is very necessary, and founders need to make sure they’re treating users’ data with the care it deserves. Singapore Trip: The ecosystem here was incredibly welcoming and supportive, and I feel fortunate to have experienced it firsthand, some notes: View on Europe Tech: When it comes to Europe, there’s a positive outlook—major outcomes and deep liquidity from private equity, secondaries, and M&A are driving optimism. Meanwhile, the sentiment around the US tech market remains very bullish, both from local LPs and companies looking to expand there quickly. Singapore as a Hub for Southeast Asia: Singapore is certainly the go-to place to launch into Southeast Asia. The country benefits from exceptional university talent and a steady influx of international professionals, drawn by the high quality of life and favourable tax policies. Regional VC Sentiment: There are challenges in the region, especially from the perspective of local LPs. The general sentiment is one of burnout in VC, primarily due to a lack of liquidity in the region. However, India stands out as a bright spot, with recent liquidity events fueling a lot of optimism for the region as many VC fund cover the Indian market from Singapore. Singapore as Country:  It’s also evident that Singapore is incredibly well-run at every level, with a strong focus on long-term investing, exemplified by innovative entities like Temsek and GIC—investing in everything from managing a VC fund of funds to owning the Singapore Zoo! After reading the recent article (link in first comment) analyzing YC portfolios for overlap in sector/solution, we were curious how our approach to portfolio mix and investments in Asia-pac looked from our 10 cohorts of investments (over 90 companies, over 6 years). Here is what we see: 👉 9 companies in Mobility, across Cohorts from our first to current (10th) cohort. Strong underlying trends/factors driving growth and opportunities in this segment - (1) Growth in infrastructure such as last mile connectivity and services like hyper-local services and B2B/B2C apps and services that need mobility solutions, and (2) The need for cost effective, EV/Sustainable mobility solutions. 👉 10 companies in Fintech across the 10 cohorts. The massive growth of the largest emerging middle class population, growth of businesses (small and large), and digitization of currency and capital flow (both Business and Consumer) has resulted in strong entrepreneurial activity and ventures launched in to meet this exploding demand/need. 👉 16 companies in Marketplace and E-commerce. Growing disposable income and spend culture, ~ 2 Billion population skewed to younger demographic in South and South east Asia 👉 8 companies in Healthtech, with several emerging during and post covid, addressing different aspects of healthcare delivery, mental health, and insurance. Overall, we have seen our portfolios fit some core themes in 2 ways: 1. Adjacent models: Portfolios that fill different parts of a theme (like EV), from manufacturing, to software, to testing, to last mile deployment solutions. 2. Two startups that recently experienced financial hardship, like SINTRATEC and Zortrax S.A., are struggling mainly because of strong competition from larger companies (like Formlabs in the case of benchtop SLS) and especially Chinese companies like Farsoon Technologies (SLS) or Bambu Lab (FFF), to mention two of the most effective examples. In the future, it will become increasingly hard to compete with Chinese companies on the most established #additivemanufacturing technologies. So what can Western startups do? What they must do is innovate. And that's exactly what Axtra3D has done and it's one of the reasons why it has been growing so much recently, in some ways filling the gaps. Now the company is ready to step up and go into Asian markets.

Long term greedy wins over short term greedy: China uses long term greedy by funding multiple startups in a given sector with lots of debt financing cash until winners emerge and then gives unlimited debt financing to winners at no cost; Rest of World/West uses short term greedy by funding multiple startups in a given sectors with equity financing cash to force to positive cash flow asap and then exit (by IPO or sale) with winners getting access to some debt financing but at higher cost than China. China has superior strategy as judged by metrics of capitalism. Hard to see how to beat this.

How to take advice is important. Prioritize taking advice from founders (over people who may be knowledgeable but are giving you advice from a completely different PoV). Ideally, try to find founders that have actually done the thing you are trying to do. When it comes to Korean startups going global, there's unfortunately not many that you can take advice from. Cue Ryan Lee (Jigo.ai) on Learning and Adapting in Business: "Be careful who you reach out to, and take advice from people who are closer to what you want to achieve...
