At Sidara, we believe that empowering women is essential to driving innovation and creating a more inclusive future in our industry. Initiatives like our employability career coaching day with Dress for Success Greater London exemplify our commitment to supporting women as they build the confidence, skills, and networks they need to thrive. Last month we welcomed 15 women from Dress for Success to this inspiring event at the Sidara Showcase, 150 Holborn, hosted by our Sidara companies, including Currie & Brown, Introba UK & Ireland, Penspen, and Perkins&Will. A packed day began with keynote speakers from Sidara companies sharing their career experiences in the built environment, followed by workshops on personal branding, LinkedIn tips, CV development, and interview coaching. Participants also received professional headshots to take home. Dress for Success is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to empowering women with the training, support, professional attire, and development tools to help them thrive in work and in life. This was the first event in a new Sidara and Dress for Success employability program with Central District Alliance, and feedback shows participants found it informative and uplifting with practical advice. "Anyone who thinks they're too small to make a difference has never met the honey bee." We’re buzzing to share that Sidara at 150 Holborn has joined the Camden BeeLine! 🐝 In association with London Clean Air, Think & Do Camden, and the London Borough of Camden, the Camden BeeLine is a community project increasing green space across Camden by creating a connected pollinator pathway of trees, plants, and rewilded space. With a particular focus on improving biodiversity, air quality, and wellbeing, this takes in schools and businesses growing on any space they can, from window sills to playing fields. And roof gardens. ✋ Primarily designed as a biodiverse amenity space for our staff and visitors, our fantastic roof garden at 150 Holborn has already produced a number of benefits, including: a reduced flood risk (from attenuation tanks), lowered energy costs, and improved thermal performance for the building. This comes on top of the BREEAM New Construction Design Stage Outstanding score of 89.9%, meaning the cutting edge innovation combined with market-leading technology, and processes at 150 Holborn have created a highly sustainable, cost efficient, and future-proof space, fully aligned with Sidara’s ESG principles. And we’re targeting a BREEAM Post-Construction Outstanding score of 97.21% for the rest of the office building as well now – watch this space! Achieving a zero-emission, efficient, and resilient built environment will require systemic transformation—and we all have a role to play. Today, at COP29 Azerbaijan sustainability experts from Sidara were sharing real-world examples of tools, processes, and innovative design approaches that have moved the dial on decarbonizing the buildings and infrastructure that keeps our society moving. Participating in two sessions Dar’s Balsam Nehme and Faysal Shair discussed the role of role of designers and engineers in advancing sustainability, as well as the digital solutions needed to decarbonize the full asset lifecycle at scale and at pace. As COP29 Azerbaijan gets underway in #Baku, we reflect on the scale of the challenge we face and the importance of new solutions if we are to solve the climate crisis. Celebrating World Town Planning Day this week with a look at some of our Sidara Collaborative companies’ award-winning urban planning work around the world. Earlier this year Urban Initiatives were shortlisted for the RTPI International (South East) Best Plan award for the Sevenoaks Town Neighbourhood Plan. This Plan was prepared collaboratively and with extensive engagement with stakeholders and the local community. The Neighbourhood Plan was adopted by Sevenoaks District Council last year following a public referendum. Previously, Urban Initiatives won the RTPI Planning Consultant of the Year award in 2003, the RTPI Silver Jubilee Cup in 2000 for the Cork Historic Action Plan, and again in 2002 for the Bristol Legible City Initiative. The Silver Jubilee Cup is the award given to the overall winner of the RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence. And they won the RTPI Planning Consultancy of the Year and Innovation of the Year Award in 2005 for their Greater Ashford development framework, which made use of role playing gaming techniques to agree smart growth with local residents and stakeholders. Dar’s strategic city master plan for Ibadan, Nigeria, won the RTPI International Award for Planning Excellence 2019. A major centre for trade and exchange, Ibadan’s population was forecast to grow to 13.5 million by 2032, a 90% increase from 2016. Inadequate infrastructure, coupled with increasingly regular and damaging flooding events, prompted an extensive 18-month stakeholder engagement consultation to develop the now adopted strategic master plan for Ibadan and its hinterland. Creating sustainable, liveable communities that balance the needs of people, environment, and economy is at the heart of town planning.
