🚨 Japan‘s Autonomous Truck Priority Lane Here‘s what you need to know: → Launch of priority lanes for autonomous trucks on a 100-kilometer stretch of the Shin-Tomei Expressway → Starting March 3 → From 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays, one lane in each direction will be prioritized for AV testing →Ordinary vehicles can still use the lanes during testing, but drivers are urged not to obstruct AVs → This one-year trial aims to test unmanned autonomous trucks on a designated lane from Surugawan-Numazu to Hamamatsu → Roadside sensors will assist AVs by detecting debris and supporting navigation at lane merges My thoughts: Japan is making steady, strategic moves toward autonomous freight corridors. This trial isn’t an isolated experiment—it’s a move in Japan’s long-term playbook to solve its logistics crisis through autonomous trucking. This trial is a natural extension of Japan’s broader AV strategy, which includes concepts like the planned Tokyo–Osaka “conveyor belt” corridor. It’s clear Japan is building a roadmap where priority lanes today could become fully dedicated AV corridors tomorrow. The backdrop here is Japan’s chronic driver shortage, made worse by an aging workforce and the “2024 logistics cliff” (working hour reforms cutting driver capacity). Japan isn’t just testing technology—it’s racing to safeguard its supply chains. Offloading perception tasks to V2I systems could help AVs navigate more safely, especially in bad weather or challenging conditions I assume. Since AV priority lanes are from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., human traffic will be minimal—reducing potential conflicts between AVs and human drivers. Great to see the progress globally in autonomous driving. 🚛 🌎 What are your thoughts on Japan’s Priority Lane approach?
