The British Council is 90 this year. That’s 90 years of helping learners realise their dreams. So we couldn’t be more proud of our 2020 IELTS Award winner, Manas Goyal. At just 16, Manas developed a banking app to help people in developing countries manage their money, which reached half a million global users. After completing his IELTS test, Manas received the British Council IELTS Award. The award is given to high calibre individuals who want to develop their career and demonstrate that they have the potential to contribute to society with their studies. He used the £10,000 prize money to fund the first year of his BSc in Accounting and Finance at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), UK, an experience that changed his life and career prospects. Since then, he’s worked at some of the largest financial firms, engaged with top-ranking German politicians, won the US President’s Award for Educational Excellence, and mentored Rwandan startups and newly arrived refugees in Germany. As if all that wasn’t enough, he’s now pursuing a Master’s in Finance at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), specialising in Corporate Finance. Amazing work, Manas! Tell us how English has helped you. 👇 #BritishCouncil90 #BritishCouncilAssessment #LanguageTests #LanguageAssessments #LearnEnglish #LearnEnglish #EnglishAssessments #IELTS #TakeIELTS

Some people might say tests are a necessary fact of life for teens and young learners, and just something to be endured. So what if they don’t like tests? They’re for the teacher’s benefit, not the students’, right? 🤷 We say that’s wrong! 🙅 Sure, regular testing is necessary, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be an enjoyable experience. Fact is, the more learner-centric your tests are, the better learners will perform. 😀 Our latest blog post dives deep into how and why we design tests that adapt to learners, and not the other way around. 👇 Check it out: #BritishCouncilAssessment #EnglishTests #PrimaryEnglishTest #LanguageAssessments #TeachEnglish #EnglishExams #ArtificialIntelligence #YoungLearners #TakeIELTS #AptisESOL

At the New Directions East Asia 2023 conference, Professor Barry O'Sullivan, English Language Research at the British Council, emphasised the importance of mastering English through four fundamental skills; reading, writing, speaking and listening. ‘There's a massive deficiency among many learners who learn languages, for example English or other languages even for many years, and then can't use the language when they finish. They can’t communicate, which should be the purpose of language. [...] The best technology is helping people to learn to use the language. Learning that language is for life, it is used for real communication between people, and [...] teaching, learning and assessment of the language should focus on 4 skills, not just on the easy-to-test and easy-to-teach elements.’ Meet with him and other industry experts at the New Directions East Asia 2024 conference, happening this week.
