Balfour Beatty plc has set a 2050 target to achieve net zero across Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. Yet around 450 of Balfour Beatty's UK supply chain partners were responsible for 86% of the company's Scope 3 purchased goods and services carbon emissions in 2023. The company's analysis of its Scope 3 carbon emissions also showed that the goods and services it purchases represented 84% of its Scope 3 carbon emissions. This included products like cement, steel and aggregates, which are hard to decarbonize. The company is therefore focusing efforts on this category – as well as carbon emissions from investments – as these are the areas where it can have the biggest impact. While the company does not control suppliers' efforts to reduce their own carbon emissions, it supports and encourages them to do so, as their success directly contributes to Balfour Beatty meeting its own Scope 3 reduction targets. Organizations see having good digital foundations as critical to the net zero journey. More and more companies are utilizing smart technologies to capture, measure and monitor carbon usage and productivity. "What gets measured gets managed. The more effectively we can measure, the better we can progress." It's the old adage, according to Joanna Gilroy (MBA), Group Sustainability Director at international infrastructure group Balfour Beatty. The integration of technology and data, such as BIM or digital twins enable firms to create and monitor buildings to operate energy-efficiently. Indispensable for calculate embodied carbon, digitalization is here to stay. However, with only 64% of survey respondents thinking they are using data well across an asset's life cycle, the industry is still quite far away from where it needs to be. Organizations face the challenge of knowing how to leverage the data generated throughout the asset life cycle. Implementing a strategic roadmap for achieving net zero still lacks standardization within the industry..
