  • South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol could become the first sitting president of the country to face an arrest after a court issued a warrant against him, domestic media reported. ➡️ The Seoul Western District Court issued the detention warrant against Yoon, Korea Times reported, after he failed to show up for questioning, despite multiple summons by a joint investigation unit comprising South Korea’s police and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials. ➡️ The warrant empowers the CIO to take Yoon into custody for questioning within a 48 hours.   • South Korea’s acting President Choi Sang-mok has ordered the transport ministry to carry out an emergency safety inspection of the country’s airline operation system, local news agency Yonhap reported Monday. ➡️ Choi was speaking at a disaster control meeting in Seoul, after a Jeju Air flight crashed at the country’s Muan International Airport on Sunday, leading to 179 fatalities with just two survivors, making it the deadliest air accident in South Korea. ➡️ “The pilot declared mayday after issuing the bird strike alert,” said Joo Jong-wan, director of aviation policy division at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Choi pledged that the government would “spare no effort” in supporting the bereaved families, and declared a seven-day mourning period for the country.   • The European Union’s blockbuster trade deal with South America’s Mercosur bloc is widely regarded as highly controversial, with EU member states split over its terms and many wary of yet another farmer flashpoint. ➡️ After 25 years of talks, the EU and five South American countries — Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and, newly, Bolivia — signed a landmark trade agreement on Dec. 6, setting the stage for one of the world’s biggest free trade zones. ➡️ The trans-Atlantic partnership is estimated to cover an area of more than 700 million people and represents about 20% of global gross domestic product.
