The Government’s decision on whether to approve London Gatwick’s #NorthernRunway project has been delayed until October. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander was due to announce today (Thursday, 27 February) if Gatwick’s expansion plan - that would create around 14,000 new jobs and contribute £1 billion into the region’s economy every year - could go ahead. However, she instead issued a “minded to approve” letter – a vote of confidence for expansion – but said not all "provisions" put forward by planning inspectors had been considered by all parties. Prologis UK announces a significant increase to its Foreign Direct Investment in Croydon and Sutton Prologis’ investments in the boroughs include eight Industrial Logistics distribution centres spanning 650,000 sq. ft., home to national and international businesses, including Royal Mail, Amazon, Oddbox, Easyshipping and Unitrunk Limited. Expanding on this investment, Prologis UK is developing a further four additional market-leading units, covering 93,935 sq. ft as a second phase to Prologis Park Beddington on Beddington Lane. Completion is expected in May 2025, offering four BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rated units ranging between 15,000 to 46,000 sq. ft. London Gatwick opens applications for its 2025 apprenticeship programme. The airport is recruiting four engineering apprentices to start in August and one IT apprentice to start in September. The engineering apprenticeship is a four-year fixed contract leading to a fully qualified engineering technician status with industry-recognised qualifications. The IT apprenticeship is a two-year fixed contract, leading to a Level 3 IT technician qualification. The first apprentices at London Gatwick joined in 1977, marking over 48 years of experience. The airport has trained 300 apprentice engineers, and over a third have decided to remain at the airport. Croydon Council and Transport for London (TfL) are working together to install the much-needed new bus shelters.🚏 The construction of the new shelters, which replace those removed in 2021, has begun, with the first ones now in place. The agreement with TfL will see them install, maintain, and regularly clean the new shelters with no capital or ongoing costs to the Council. More than 100 locations across the borough will get the new shelters and where shelters are being replaced, they will have the same functionality as the previous ones.
