Our latest case study looks at a retrofit hybrid system installed in a Bradford resource centre. It included an AEROTOP air source heat pump and 2 THISION S Plus, high-efficiency condensing gas boilers as a back up for the coldest months. Installed well over a year ago, the boilers have yet to be needed, highlighting why heat pumps are an excellent choice in the decarbonisation of older buildings. With phase 4 of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme being announced recently, we thought we'd revisit a heat pump installation at a school in the West Midlands. We worked closely with our partner Lord Combustion Services Limited on this exciting project where a cascade of commercial heat pumps was installed to supplement the existing heating system and reduce the school's overall carbon footprint. In this case, the existing heating system required an upgrade rather than a complete refit making it perfect for a hybrid approach. Phase 4 of the PSDS will be open to applications that look to replace fossil fuel heating systems at end of life with new low carbon heating solutions. So, although a hybrid approach is valid in many scenarios to begin decarbonisation now, they will not be covered in this new round of funding.
