How can we repurpose EV batteries at the end of their lifecycle, to avoid replacing one environmental impact with another? It is a challenge the world faces as we transition from traditional internal combustion engines to electric vehicles. The West Midlands’ is at the forefront of solving this piece of the puzzle, developing a full-circle electrification supply chain. How? ℹ️ Last year, Volkswagen Group UK Ltd signed an agreement with Ecobat, a global leader in battery recycling, to collect and recycle EV batteries at its UK Diagnostics & Disassembly Centre in Darlaston, Walsall. ℹ️ WMG, University of Warwick Energy Innovation Centre, in conjunction with Nissan Motor Corporation, developed a fast-grading process for the reuse of Li-ion Batteries, reducing the time taken from over 3 hours to as little as 3 minutes. We’ve got the R&D, the manufacturing expertise and recycling capability. Everything your business needs to excel in the battery technology market. It starts here. In the West Midlands, through research and partnerships with industry, our universities are instrumental in supporting that innovation. Stuart Croft, Vice Chancellor of the University of Warwick, highlights in this blog: 🔬 How the university has fostered business engagement through its science park and various initiatives. 👥 Why this research infrastructure offers spaces for co-location, testing, and scaling ideas, which is vital for fostering innovation at all levels.
