1 in 5 children have experienced cyberbullying 1 in 3 children have seen something worrying or nasty online Just under 1/2 of children have been exposed to online pornography These are only a few of the harrowing statistics associated with the poor online safety for children. The enduring failure to protect our most vulnerable can cause significant emotional, developmental, and even physical harm. Furthermore, the scale of risk vectors is rapidly growing with the proliferation of deepfakes. Even toddlers are at risk. In a recent PEW report, 57% of parents with children younger than 2 report their child watches videos on YouTube. About 8% of parents with children younger than 4 report their child uses Snapchat. Parents are increasingly worried, and, importantly, governments are taking action. Ofcom will begin enforcing the Online Safety Act (OSA) in the UK next spring with fines up to **10% of global annual revenue.** As is typical of any legislation, we can expect guidelines on what to do, not how to do it. And we can expect Big Tech to push back in attempts to offload responsibility, a likely battle between apps, operating systems, and parents. However, legislators means business. Big Tech has already been fined hundreds of millions of dollars for child privacy violations: - In 2019, YouTube fined a record $170M to settle allegations by the FTC regarding illegal collection of personal information from children without their parents’ consent. - In 2023, Amazon agreed to injunctive relief and $25M civil penalty for alleged violations of Children’s Privacy Law - In 2022, Epic Games fined $520M over children’s privacy and trickery charges So, how might we address the glaring safety gaps for kids in this digital era?
