General average (GA) is a legal principle firmly embedded in maritime law. It requires everyone involved in a voyage to share the costs of preserving the ship and its cargo in an emergency. For insurers, a general average clause obliges different companies covering different risks to share the cost of losses incurred. Yet the absence of a general average clause in an offshore contract does not automatically exclude the application of the principle. At an IUA market briefing on 13 November we will be exploring this question, examining in detail how general average may be applied to equipment, cargo or any other property carried on board a vessel. Michiel Starmans, a Fellow of the The Association of Average Adjusters Adjusters and Alf Inge Johannessen Senior Claims Manager at DOF are our expert speakers. The event will be chaired by Ann Waite, Honorary Chair of the Association of Average Adjusters. Attendance is free and may be either online or in-person. Flash back to 1860 when presenting to our client friends on 'Evolution of the York-Antwerp Rules' at CT Hong Kong office boardroom, an extended technical sharing from May by way of a 'Lunch and Learn'. Time travelling 160 years from the 'Glasgow Resolutions 1860' to the latest version of York-Antwerp Rules 2016, the evolution of the 'game rules' in our daily work of General Average has been refreshed in half an hour interactive session. Any takeaway served? Sure! The YARs definitely stood the test of time. Happy to learn that you all enjoyed it. Stay tuned for the next one. #RHL #ExpertiseYouCanTrust #CharlesTaylorAdjusting
