“Eau De Fatberg” Scientists in the UK are transforming fatbergs into perfumes, which could lead to a greener future in the perfume industry. Could the future smell like fresh pine, thanks to fatbergs? Is the thought of having perfume derived from fatbergs be a complete turn-off to you? We would love to hear your thoughts on this. About us
Unblocktober is the world’s first month-long national campaign dedicated to improving the health of our drains, sewers, watercourses, and seas. Launched by Lanes Group plc in 2019, this annual initiative encourages individuals, businesses, and communities across the UK to pledge to change their habits and make a positive impact on the environment. Our mission is to raise awareness about the everyday actions that contribute to pollution, fatbergs, and blockages in our drainage systems. By educating people on the importance of disposing of waste properly, we aim to reduce the amount of fat, oil, grease, and non-biodegradable items that end up in our drains and sewers. Unblocktober is more than just a campaign—it's a movement. Throughout October, we challenge participants to adopt better practices, such as avoiding the disposal of fats, oils, and greases (FOG) down the sink, and refraining from flushing non-flushable items like wet wipes. These small changes can have a significant impact on our environment, helping to prevent water pollution and protect marine life. The campaign has garnered widespread support from environmental organizations, businesses, and individuals who are committed to making a difference. By joining Unblocktober, you’re not only helping to safeguard our water systems but also contributing to a cleaner, greener future. Together, we can tackle one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time—one small change at a time.

Protecting your drains during the festive season doesn’t require drastic changes - just a few simple tweaks to how you handle waste can make a big difference. ◻️ Cool it and bin it: after cooking, let fats and oils cool down before scraping them into a container or straight into the bin. ◼️Ditch the wet wipes: wet wipes are handy for cleaning up, but they don’t break down in water like toilet paper. Even if they say “flushable,” throw them in the bin instead to avoid blockages. ◻️Scrape your plates and pans: before washing up, scrape leftover food and grease into the bin. It only takes a moment, but prevents fats and bits of food from making their way into your pipes. ◼️Use a sink strainer: a small strainer in your sink can catch food scraps and prevent them from going down the plughole. It’s an easy, inexpensive way to protect your drains. ◻️Spread the word: if you’re hosting family and friends, remind everyone to think twice about what they’re pouring or flushing. A quick chat can save you from dealing with drain disasters later. This Christmas, let’s keep the festive cheer flowing by protecting our drains and sewers from unnecessary blockages.

We welcome the Government's decision to bring in a ban on single-use vapes in England. Over the last couple of years, we have seen an increase in the amount of vapes that have been incorrectly disposed of down toilets, ending up in watercourses across the country. Vapes can release toxic chemicals as they degrade, further harming animals and the environment. What are your thoughts? Do you think the Government has made the correct decision to ban disposable vapes? 📷 - The Rivers Trust

79% of people have admitted to washing paint down their drains, contributing to blockages and fatbergs. So what is the best way to dispose of your leftover paints? 1️⃣ Squeeze any leftover paint from your brushes onto an absorbent material (such as newspaper or old rags) and dispose of with household rubbish. 2️⃣ For any leftover paint on the brush you can wash them in a bucket filled with water. Then leave overnight and by morning the paint solids will have settled to the bottom. 3️⃣ Proceed to pour the clear water from your container onto your grass, were it can be absorbed by the ground, leaving the paint solids in the bottom. 4️⃣ Scrape the paint solids out onto an absorbent material, then dispose of with the rest of your household rubbish!
