Big questions about the ‘circular economy’ and how this is realised in practise, needs collaboration between policymakers, industry and innovators, if we are going to give big solutions. That’s exactly the mix of who were present for the launch of a landmark initiative, which I was asked to introduce, designed to accelerate the #circulareconomy in #London. The trial of the ROMULUS Reuse Initiative will bring together a wide range of key stakeholders in construction from across the City, from architects to developers, to work together on increasing and streamlining material reuse from construction. Romulus is a resource that will use shared audit data and material passports to achieve an unparalleled level of transparency on construction project data, shared on an exchange format provided by UPCYCLEA UK It will enable patterns of reuse and recovery to be traced, so that we can all establish best practice and provide evidence for targeted policy interventions and improve sustainability in the built environment sector. The data insights we will gain from this trial will be invaluable for the development of the City of London Corporation Circular Economy Framework and to embed circular economy principles into building projects. Along with participating local authorities, the City Corporation will oversee the pilot to learn more about how circular economy processes work and identify how these can be supported with targeted policy and guidance. With the built environment industry contributing around 40% of global carbon emissions, initiatives like Romulus are vital in signalling to investors that we are committed to meeting our #NetZero goals, through #sustainable growth in construction within the City.
