In this blog, Tiffany Langford, our newly appointed Collections Intern, talks about her research with the Wilberforce Institute and the Ferens Art Gallery and introduces Thomas Ferens, a benefactor of both organisations and a committed Methodist and art collector. https://lnkd.in/eJxfkTJQ During her internship, Tiffany will examine Ferens’ work and legacy, including bringing issues of slavery and women's exploitation to parliament and his influence on the Ferens Art Gallery collection. Thomas Ferens made many donations to charitable causes and his donation of land and £250,000 established University College which became the University of Hull. He is memorialised in the University of Hull motto ‘Lampada Ferens’, meaning 'bearing the torch’ and the dove from Ferens’ coat of arms appears in the University of Hull logo. 

A new exhibit sheds light on innovative approach to tackling poverty in Hull. 💡 It follows the work of the Hull Poverty Truth Commission (HPTC), a two-year initiative which has brought together policy makers with those who have experience of poverty. Dr Isabel Pilar Arce Zelada, a social and cultural anthropologist recently published this blog: https://lnkd.in/exD_FfSy where she explored her “insatiable curiosity to learn more from those whose narratives are erased by our nation-states”, Dr Jen Nghishitende’s research focuses on the reintegration and sense of belonging experienced by rejected Namibian asylum seekers who have returned to their communities. Her PhD research examined the complex realities faced by women in the UK after escaping #modernslavery and #humantrafficking. Today we are preparing to welcome partners from across Humberside to the Wilberforce Institute to discuss and further develop our partnership approach to using Slavery and Trafficking Risk Orders #STRO. Oftentimes this type of action can be the most appropriate and effective way to disrupt further exploitation occurring in our communities. #Partnership #AntiSlavery

Dr Samuel North is a former University of Hull PhD scholar, whose thesis explored how slavery is remembered and memorialised in South Africa.
