About us
World Anemia Awareness Day is funded by Human Touch Media Foundation, a non profit focused on medical education. In 2022 World Anemia Awareness launched its first global campaign in association with the Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management (SABM) in response to the global issues of anemia and iron deficiency mainly affecting women and children. It is marked on 13 February as 13 represents the ideal hemoglobin number for optimal blood health. The 2023 global campaign has now reached an audience of over 12 million. The campaign focus is to keep the problem of anemia and iron deficiency in the spotlight. It is especially for the general public as it is a problem often overlooked by medical professionals. World Anemia Awareness Day aims to be: - a platform for raising awareness of anemia and iron deficiency - a global driver to promote the importance of preventative action in order to support blood health. Every year, the World Anemia Awareness Day campaign focuses on a dedicated theme that will run for one or more years. The theme for World Anemia Awareness Day in 2024 is “The Best Blood is Your Blood”.

Awareness of the options, benefits and risks are so important for moms to be. #bloodhealth #patientempowerment #pregnancy #anemia #irondeficiency
What are the benefits and risks of intravenous versus oral iron for treating iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy? Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a condition caused by insufficient levels of iron in the blood, affecting how well the blood can carry oxygen throughout the body. People with IDA can experience fatigue, weakness, headaches, dizziness, and shortness of breath. Iron therapies help increase the amount of available iron in the blood and can increase haemoglobin levels, provided there are no other causes of anaemia. The two main forms of iron therapy are intravenous (injected into a vein) and oral (by mouth). This #SystematicReview evaluates whether intravenous iron is better than oral iron at treating iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy and examines any unwanted effects. The review analysed 13 studies involving a total of 3939 pregnant women with iron deficiency anaemia. Key findings: 👉 Intravenous iron is likely better at treating anaemia caused by a lack of iron during pregnancy than oral iron. 👉Intravenous iron may result in little to no difference in heavy bleeding after childbirth and likely results in little to no difference in need for blood transfusion compared to oral iron. 👉Serious unwanted effects were rare and may not be increased with intravenous iron compared to oral iron. 📖 Read the full #CochraneReview and the #PlainLanguage summary in the #CochraneLibrary - https://lnkd.in/ghWJR_Pa Nicholson L, Axon E, Daru J, Rogozińska E. Dr Nighat Arif highlights on ITV’s Loose Women, how important it is for women to track any symptoms related to their periods. Women have been suffering in silence because of a lack of education around #menstrualhealth matters and thought it was something to “put up with”. Age doesn’t matter, even if you’re really young, if periods are impacting life and education, it needs investigation. And… most likely our young ones will need an advocate to help them navigate the health system. Summed up well at the end, “inform yourself” because the more notes and details kept on symptoms and pain, hopefully the faster you can get some relief, especially when health systems are struggling. #womenshealth #bloodhealth #anemia #irondeficiency #endometriosis #health #teenhealth #loosewomen

Hands up if you struggle with iron deficiency anaemia 🙋🏾♀️ If you’ve been taking iron supplements or having more iron rich foods (*non heme*) in your diet to improve your iron levels and it doesn’t seem to be improving, sometimes, these little things could be factors: 1. Vitamin C foods like oranges, apples, bell peppers, broccoli etc can help improve iron absorption so pairing your iron supplements with them can really help. 2. Calcium containing foods like cheese, yoghurt or milk can affect iron absorption because they compete with iron in the bowels, reducing the amount your body can absorb. 3. High fibre foods like wholegrain, brown rice etc and caffeine can affect iron absorption too as they may have chemicals which bind to iron. Also, fibre is what we call a bulking agent which speeds up the passage of food through the gut reducing the time available for iron absorption. So, try having your iron with vitamin C and avoid having them with caffeine, calcium rich and high fibre foods. Instead have these at other times at least 1-2 hours before or after. ♥️ If you are still struggling, please always see your doctor for more support. Sometimes Iron infusions are required. Is this helpful? Really loved sharing these tips at the Guidance Suite - a safe space founded by Dawn Heels for women to share their experiences about their gynaecological conditions - last night. *non heme - the form of iron found in plant based foods (eg beans, spinach, lentils) and fortified foods.* #knowledgeispower #irondeficiency #irondeficiencyanemia #heavyperiods #fibroidawareness

A less visible form of malnutrition, HIDDEN HUNGER, occurs when a child becomes deficient in vitamins and other essential micronutrients. Such deficiencies lead to delayed physical growth, a weakened immune system and impaired brain development. #Irondeficiency and #anemia are among the most common forms of hidden hunger, affecting children’s ability to learn and grow. Nutrition is so important, every child deserves the chance to grow up strong, healthy, and full of potential. 💕 #WorldChildrensDay #anaemia #healthmatters #nutrition #hiddenhunger #malnutrition
