Obvious statement incoming: Travelling is always fun to do. It expands your horizons, enables you to learn about other cultures, and you can sample all the local delights. But there's one element that many of us hopping on a plane, train or automobile to far flung lands also love - hitting the shops.
There's nothing quite like strolling through high-end shops, touching the soft fabrics, smelling the local fragrances and seeing the latest in fashion. And the best part is treating yourself to something new!
Wondering where to buy a plane ticket for some retail therapy? Then keep reading. Here are some of the best shopping destinations of 2023.

Champs-Élysées is rightly known as one of the most beautiful avenues in the world, and when you set eyes on it, you'll instantly know why. The name translates to "the Elysian Fields", which is where heroes go after death in Greek mythology.
As you can imagine, the 1.9-kilometre (1.2 mile) long avenue in Paris's 8th arrondissement is filled with gorgeous architecture and historic monuments. Notably, this is where the Arc de Triomphe is, as well as the Grand Palais and Petit Palais. And seeing as it's such an iconic area, it's perhaps little surprise that Champs-Élysées is also the finish point for the Tour de France.
More importantly (for the purposes of this article at least), you'll find high-end designer boutiques here, such as Chanel and Louis Vuitton.
When you're tired and need a break, you'll have a fantastic selection of world-class restaurants to eat exquisite dishes at - and if you're here during the winter, then you'll enjoy a fabulous Christmas market too!
By staying at Hôtel Barrière le Fouquet's Paris, you can get a good night's rest and an early start on shopping, as you'll be only 70m away from Avenue des Champs-Élysées.
Car on the street of Via Monte Napoleone in Milan (source)
If you've got expensive tastes (and your wallet has plenty of capacity), then Via Monte Napoleone is where to go for retail therapy. This upscale shopping area is the most expensive street in Europe and ranks third in the entire world.
While the street is only 350m long, it's definitely quality over quantity here, as it's the flagship area of the Milan fashion district Quadrilatero della Moda, where you'll find many high-end boutiques. Within Via Monte Napoleone, there's a concentration of ready-to-wear fashion and jewellery shops.
In addition, the street has elegant art galleries, fine-dining restaurants, and luxury hotels. For a taste of this glamour, book a night or two at Armani Hotel Milano. Via Monte Napoleone will be at your doorstep, and you can shop until you literally drop before you head back to your comfortable room.
If you can, visit during Milan Fashion Week. The hustle and bustle of locals and tourists mingling will be spectacular!
Red bus on Oxford Street in London (source)
Oxford Street spans 1.9 km (1.2 miles) and is Europe's busiest shopping street. It has over 300 shops and restaurants, and at peak times gets over half a million visitors a day - quite the number…
This is the perfect area to be in if you like more affordable yet quality shopping, with the choice ranging from budget clothing to high-end boutiques. There are several department stores on Oxford Street, including the iconic Selfridges, as well as giant branches of John Lewis and Marks & Spencer. You'll also have your pick of flagship high street chain stores here, too.
In addition to affordability and range, Oxford Street is very accessible too. Public transport will have you shopping in no time, as it's in central London. But if you stay at Radisson Blu Edwardian Bond Street Hotel, it'll take under 5 minutes to walk over.
For something a little different from the better-known fashion cities, head over to the most famous street in central Vienna: Kaerntner Strasse. Not only is it renowned, but it's also full of international fashion brands - think Prada, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton.
The bustling 900m street will energise you as you drift from store to store, especially since there are fun souvenir shops in the mix. You can indulge in Viennese delicacies and purchase traditional Austrian clothes to take home.
Make sure to take in the view though, as Kaerntner Strasse is in the historic city centre. It's home to St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Vienna State Opera. On any given day, you'll find buskers who will entertain you as you shop.
Have a convenient holiday by staying in the centrally-located Hotel Sacher Wien. This posh 5-star hotel places you just 2 minutes' walk away from Kaerntner Strasse.

Looking for a workout? Then you won't be disappointed with Fifth Avenue in NYC! If you walk from one end to the other, it's almost 10 km (6 miles) in length.
But of course, this is one of the most famous retail streets in the entire world. Shopping here is a win-win situation, as you'll get to revel in the number of top-notch shops while walking alongside plenty of The Big Apple's most famous landmarks (we'll get to that shortly). Of course, there's the famous Saks Fifth Avenue, as well as Bergdorf Goodman and Tiffany & Co.
Not only are there luxury stores - Fifth Avenue has major department stores too. Have a look around Macy's and Bloomingdale's, where you'll find a wide range of goods at different price points.
As you stroll down the street, you'll see the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, and St. Patrick's Cathedral. If you've got time, check out the museums on Museum Mile (between 82nd to 110th Streets).
To rest your weary feet, treat yourself by booking a room at The Pierre, A Taj Hotel, New York. It's right on Fifth Avenue and the 5-star hotel has plenty of amenities and services to pamper yourself with.
Large shop in Kurfürstendamm in Berlin (source)
The Kurfürstendamm (also known as Ku'damm) is one of the most famous avenues in the German capital, so you know the shopping's good here. In fact, it's informally known as the Champs-Élysées of Berlin!
You'll find both international and German fashion brands on this avenue, as well as furniture stores and art galleries. What makes the Kurfürstendamm unique is that there are also some well-known car manufacturers' showrooms here. So if you're in the market for a new car…
This 3.5 km (2.2 mile) avenue runs through Berlin, so there are plenty of opportunities to stop off for sightseeing. Like many of the other shopping locations on this list, Kurfürstendamm is home to some historic landmarks. Take the time to stop by the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church or the Europa Center to learn more about Berlin.
People on La Rambla in Barcelona (source)
Perhaps not as famously, Barcelona has its strength in shopping too. La Rambla is a 1.2 km street right in the centre of the capital, and it's a scene of beautiful chaos - especially during tourist season. But there's plenty of things to get in exchange for your Euros down here…
While walking down La Rambla, you'll see colourful buildings in addition to the lively atmosphere. There aren't as many luxury brands on this street, but you'll have plenty of souvenir shops, clothing stores, and specialty shops to sift through. The abundant street vendors are good fun to browse too.
You'll be delighted to know that La Rambla takes you past several historic landmarks, such as the Boqueria Market and La Boqueria Chapel.
A room at the Petit Palace Boqueria Garden will put you right next to La Rambla. It'll also be in the heart of Barcelona, so you'll be within walking distance of all the great tourist attractions.
