It is endowed by nature with towering mountains, babbling rivers, and vast underground plains, earning the title 'Queen of the Underground World.' It is home to the world's first cave railway. In April 1818, cave lamplighter Luka Čeč discovered the most spectacular part of Postojna Cave. The following year, it was developed into a tourist cave, attracting a continuous stream of visitors. Over the next few decades, people sought a suitable way for tourists to explore the cave more easily under the light of flashlights. On June 16, 1872, the first recorded Postojna Cave railway officially opened, with cave guides pulling two carriages named 'Phaetons' (each carrying four tourists) through the cave.
