Harmonious and Beautiful Island

Nan'ao Island is located in Nan'ao County, Shantou City, Guangdong Province, China. It is bordered by Zhelin Bay to the north and the South China Sea to the south, and is situated between 116°56′~117°9′E and 23°24′~23°29′N. It is a bedrock continental island and an important habitat for the Chinese white dolphin. Nan'ao Island is located at the junction of the sea areas of Fujian, Guangdong, and Taiwan provinces in China, and is only 7 nautical miles away from the main international shipping route in the western Pacific Ocean. It is known as the "eastern Guangdong barrier and the throat of Fujian and Guangdong," and has always been a necessary stopover and transit point for trade along the southeast coast of China. It is also a major channel for trade between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, as well as for maritime trade. Zheng He, a famous Chinese navigator, passed by Nan'ao Island five times during his seven voyages to the Western Ocean. Nan'ao Island has also been mentioned many times in the history of Chinese and world navigation. When visiting Nan'ao Island, start from the Nan'ao Bridge and enjoy the beautiful coastline along the way. Nan'ao Island is the only national 4A-level tourist attraction in China that covers the entire island, and is the only island in Nan'ao County with a resident population. On June 8, 2023, Nan'ao Island was selected by the Ministry of Natural Resources of China as one of the "Harmonious and Beautiful Islands" in the country.
