Located in Hyogo Prefecture, Kobe has prospered as an international trading port. This means it has been influenced by many exotic foreign cultures over the years. It has long been known for its unique multicultural streets. If you find this kind of western style to your taste, you should come to Motomachi and the Kobe Kitano Museum to see the old foreign style houses. However, Kobe is most famous for Kobe beef. Almost everyone who comes to Kobe has to try the best steak in the world. Kobe also has beautiful scenic spots like Mount Rokkō and the Arima Onsen. Prosperous since ancient times, it exudes antique Japanese atmosphere and is a popular tourist city.

Arima Onsen in Kobe, Japan.
As the weather gets colder, it's a great time to soak in a hot spring. If you're planning a trip to Kobe, be sure to include Arima Onsen in your itinerary. It's the oldest hot spring in the Kansai region, located in Arimacho, Kita Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. Known as the "hinterland of Kobe," it's one of Japan's top three hot springs:
1. History and Legend: The history of Arima Onsen dates back to the 8th century AD, built by Buddhist monks. It is said that Emperor Jomei and Emperor Kōtoku both visited this place and were delighted by the miraculous effects of the hot springs. Arima Onsen became famous and gradually became a popular destination for Japanese royalty, nobles, and literati.
2. Hot Spring Features: The water of Arima Onsen is rich in minerals and is mainly divided into two types: Kinsen and Ginsen. Kinsen is rich in iron, the water is reddish-brown, and the temperature exceeds 90°C. It is said to have significant effects on rheumatism, neuralgia, gynecological diseases, and gastrointestinal diseases. Ginsen is a colorless and transparent carbonated spring with a water temperature of about 50°C. It contains carbonic acid and a small amount of radioactivity, and has unique effects on chronic digestive system diseases, chronic constipation, and gout.
3. Hot Spring Inns: Arima Onsen is home to elegant hot spring inns. Most of these inns have a long history, with simple and elegant architectural styles, full of rich Japanese style, each with its own characteristics.
4. Tourist Resources: In addition to the hot springs themselves, Arima Onsen also has rich tourist resources and cultural activities. You can enjoy cherry blossoms in spring and maple leaves in autumn. In addition, there are shrine festivals, temple visits, Arima tea ceremonies, etc., allowing visitors to enjoy the hot springs while also gaining a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and history. You can also take a cable car to Mount Rokko for a unique experience.
5. Precautions: Due to the unique composition of Arima Onsen's water, it may not be suitable for some people. You can consult a doctor before deciding to soak. Also, people with tattoos are usually prohibited from soaking, as the hot spring water may react adversely with tattoo ink. In addition, when soaking in a hot spring, you should also pay attention to personal hygiene and abide by the rules and regulations of the hot spring inn.
Overall, Arima Onsen is a tourist destination that combines history, culture, natural beauty, and hot spring therapy. If you like hot springs, consider planning a visit to experience its unique charm.

Kobe Arima Onsen: A Traditional Hot Spring Town
Kobe Arima Onsen is a traditional hot spring town and one of Kobe's popular tourist attractions. It is also one of Japan's three ancient hot springs. Among the hot spring establishments, Gin no Yu and Kin no Yu are the most famous, offering public baths for day visitors. If you just want a simple bathing experience, there is a free foot bath next to the Kin no Yu shop. Visitors are advised to bring their own towels, otherwise, the shop will charge an extra fee for towels. Visitors can also choose to visit other hot spring inns for a day trip. I chose Kin no Yu for a simple hot spring experience. The shop's environment is comfortable, and the charges are very reasonable.
In addition, Arima Onsen Town offers beautiful scenery and the Yuzen Shrine for visitors to explore. The nearby shopping street, known as Yumotozaka, is a narrow stone-paved road extending from the main street of Arima Onsen. It is a great place for a stroll, allowing visitors to walk among houses from Japan's Edo period. There are many unique restaurants and shops, making it a great place to buy souvenirs, including skincare products made with Arima Onsen water. Recommended 3-Residence Tour Ticket for Maiko Sightseeing in Kobe
If you're visiting Maiko in Kobe, the 3-Residence Tour Ticket is highly recommended. [Kobe] Please let me know if there is any meat that costs over 1,000 yen at Moriya Tokumori.
Enter the store and choose your meat from the case. If you skip this step and just go to the register to order lunch, be careful. There were plates lined up at the bottom left of the case with a ridiculously good value for money, extra large 1,000 yen (300 grams of domestic beef). Apparently it's a rare item that only comes out when the beef is being butchered. It was clearly a chunk from the top of the range. I couldn't help but ask if it was sold by the gram. In the end, the plate cost 1,000 yen. I used up my yakiniku luck of the year. If you're lucky, please give it a try. Moriya is recommended for both regular lunches and dinner.

A Must-Visit Portside Diner in Tarumi, Kobe

- The sashimi in the set meal that day included sea bream, yellowtail, and Spanish mackerel. All the fish were caught in Kobe (the staff kindly explained). The food was delicious, served quickly, and the atmosphere was great. No wonder it's so popular.
