Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel located in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru on a 2,430-meter (7,970 ft) mountain ridge. Often referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas", it is the most familiar icon of the Inca Empire. We took the earliest bus at 5.30am up to Machu Picchu entrance from the gateway town of Aquas Calientes to see the gorgeous sun rose above the mountains before the beautiful clouds disappeared revealing the breathtaking Incan ruins of Machu Picchu. We spent a good 3 hours walking around and taking amazing photos. There’s no toilet once you’ve passed the entrance so make sure you use the toilet at the entrance before hiking up. Also once you’ve started one of the hiking routes, you cannot turn back but must keep moving forward till the end of the route which takes you back to the entrance where drinks, food and toilets are available so pack a bottle of water or snacks if you need them along the way. This was our top bucket list ticked and an epic trip of a lifetime!#machupicchu #peru

Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472). Often mistakenly referred to as the “Lost City of the Incas” (a title more accurately applied to Vilcabamba), it is the most familiar icon of Inca civilization. The Incas built the estate around 1450 but abandoned it a century later at the time of the Spanish Conquest. Although known locally, it was not known to the Spanish during the colonial period and remained unknown to the outside world until American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention in 1911.
Machu Picchu was built in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stone walls. Its three primary structures are the Inti Watana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. Most of the outlying buildings have been reconstructed in order to give tourists a better idea of how they originally appeared. By 1976, thirty percent of Machu Picchu had been restored and restoration continues.
Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide Internet poll.

architectural masterpiece of Incas Empire
one of the most exciting places I have been! unesco world famous historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu at 2400 meters above sea level in Peru.
located between the Peruvian Andes and the Amazon Basin, covers an area of 32500 hectares.
The Citadel was built in the 15th century and later abandoned when the Inca Empire was conquered by the Spanish.

The 7th Wonder
Machu Picchu, one of seven New Wonders of the World and undoubtedly Perù's number one tourist attraction. The UNESCO World Heritage site is also very desirable to the new generation of bloggers, podcasters or those just wanting 'that picture,' you know the elevated picture that covers the entire site without anyone photo-bombing or otherwise interfering with the shot. The most famous home of the Inca's meant even more to us than a picture to impress your friends. The 7th Wonder of the world was just that, the last one standing - we had been to all of the rest and after a couple of false starts we were on our way. After a train ride through the Andes that was priceless in itself - followed by an adrenaline filled bus ride on a track not much wider than the bus, we arrived at the entrance. Touching distance, but hold your horses another couple hundred steps on foot, and breathe.
All of the superlatives used to describe Machu Picchu are correct. Most of the site is original and untouched since the sixteenth century when it was abandoned until 1911. The walls and terraces gives us a view into the past and into a culture that once thrived. Keen Astromers, Mathematicians and Engineers the Inca's literally built a city of stone in the sky that we can all enjoy five hundred years later. Awesome seems a feeble understatement when used in the same sentence as Machu Picchu, it was simply brilliant. #machupicchu #southamerica #mountains

[Miracle in the Clouds] Machu Picchu, the Sky City of Peru's Inca Empire
🏞️[Machu Picchu Impressions]
Machu Picchu, located in the Andes Mountains of Peru, is an ancient site of the Inca Empire. The city is perched on a cliff, shrouded in mist, as if suspended in the air, and is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
👨👩👧👦[Family Adventure]
With our family, we embarked on a mysterious adventure here. The children were curious about the Inca civilization, while the adults explained the history and culture of the city.
🌄[Sunrise Experience]
We made a point of arriving at Machu Picchu at sunrise, and the shock and beauty of the first rays of sunlight illuminating the ancient city is unforgettable. The ancient city ruins in the sunlight are even more majestic and mysterious.
📿[Inca Civilization]
At Machu Picchu, we visited the ruins of the city's palaces, temples, and residences. The precise splicing and exquisite craftsmanship of these stone buildings demonstrate the wisdom and skills of the Incas.
Every corner of Machu Picchu is a great place to take pictures. We left many wonderful memories here, especially those with the ancient city ruins and the Andes Mountains.
🍲[Local Cuisine]
In Peru, we tasted Peruvian specialties such as ceviche and roasted guinea pig, each bite a deep experience of Peruvian flavors.
📝[Travel Tips]
• Book tickets in advance, as Machu Picchu limits the number of visitors per day.
• Wear comfortable hiking shoes, as you will need to hike up the mountain.
• Prepare sunscreen, a sun hat, and plenty of water, as the altitude is high and the UV rays are strong.
• Respect the local culture and customs, and do not touch or damage the ruins.
• If possible, choose to stay at a hotel near Machu Picchu for a better view of the sunrise and sunset.

23-Day South America and Antarctica Trip (Day 5)
Day 5: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco
We had breakfast at the hotel at 5:20 am. At 5:50 am, our tour leader took us to queue for the bus to the scenic area. The bus ride took about 25 minutes, and the whole journey was on a mountain road. The round-trip bus ticket cost USD 24. Fortunately, we went early and were at the front of the line. The later you go, the longer the line. At about 6:30 am, we finally got on the official shuttle bus. We bought tickets for 7:00 am and entered Machu Picchu on time.
The Machu Picchu route was revised in June this year. Before the revision, there were 5 routes. After the revision, there are 10 routes. The ticket price is the same, USD 78.
If you can't buy a ticket for Route 2 and don't want to climb the mountain, you can consider Route 1's Ruta terraza superior, which will take you to the upper terrace to take panoramic photos, but you can't get close to the ruins.
Our tour leader was super helpful. Although we bought tickets for Route 1, he found us a local guide. After paying the guide some fees, the guide took us to Route 2. So, we not only went to the upper terrace of Route 1 to take panoramic photos, but also entered Route 2 and visited the ruins. We were really happy.
Machu Picchu means "old mountain" in Inca. This town built on the mountain was once the "Rehe Palace" of the Inca emperor of Cusco. Its layout is clever and reasonable, divided into three parts: the agricultural area, the residential area for ordinary people, and the top of the mountain, which is the temple and the residence of the royal family.
The most amazing thing is that all the buildings in Machu Picchu are made of stone, and no mortar is used. The foundation of the wall is directly embedded in the rock layer, which is stable and solid. These huge granite blocks were transported over long distances and cleverly spliced together to form this magnificent ancient city.
Machu Picchu is the most important symbol of Inca civilization and the most famous historical site in South America. Although the journey was extremely difficult, it was all worth it when we saw it.
Lunch: Ponchos Peruvian Kitchen near the hotel. We came here for dinner last night. The food was good, so we came again today.
We took the train back to Cusco at 3:00 pm.
