Hokkaido Sapporo - Winter Fantasy Snow Festival
As the largest city in Hokkaido, Sapporo never sleeps.
The bustling nightlife almost makes one forget the tranquil nights of the countryside amidst the vibrant hustle and bustle. Every February, Odori Park, which stretches across the center of Sapporo, hosts a 1.5-kilometer-long fantasy of ice and snow. This is the famous "Snow Festival," the highlight of Sapporo's winter.
Sculptors from around the world use pure white snow and crystal-clear ice to create massive snow statues and ice sculptures, enhanced by spectacular light shows that make Sapporo's nights even more dazzling.
Besides the Odori venue, the Susukino site also showcases a variety of imaginative ice sculptures. The Snow Festival is also a lively marketplace. Various food stalls offer an array of delights such as skewers, fried chicken, wagyu beef, coffee, and hot milk. As the temperature drops, the crowds in Sapporo rise.

This park stretches 1.5km from Odori Nishi 1-chome to Odori Nishi 12-chome in the center of Sapporo. It was built in 1871. The beautiful flower beds and lawns are very relaxing, even though it's in the city.

It's also a popular event venue, and when I visited, the Sapporo Summer Festival was being held and a beer garden was being held.
In winter, it is also one of the venues for the Sapporo Snow Festival.

🍯 Sapporo travel tips
- Sapporo Station to Susukino is connected underground, so if it's cold, go underground
- I recommend finding a place to stay close to the underground exit! (It's very difficult to move around with a carrier on the ground)
- Sapporo city is not as cold as you think (in my opinion), so I think it would be good to bring a few heavy hot packs or buy them locally!
- For those who find ryokans burdensome, I recommend going for 3 nights and 4 days, excluding the ryokan schedule!
- Be sure to use the local Hokkaido convenience store 'Seicomart' (I highly recommend Yubari Melon ice cream!!)

Odori Park (大通公園, Ōdōri Kōen) is a park located in the heart of Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. Ōdōri (大通) means "large street" in Japanese. I took some pictures around the TV Tower. It feels good to take a walk! When the weather is nice, it's a place where you can take a rest.
I wish I can come back again to Hokkaido in year 2023.

Sapporo Snow Festival is a must visit during winter in February at Odori Park. You can see many snow sculptures here from building, Doraemon, Pokemon and many more. We arrived on the last weekend of the festival so it was very busy and some the smaller sculptures had started to melt but the scale was impressive. Best in my mind was the Helsinki Cathedral and the JR display which used video onto the sculpture to make it look like it was moving. Huge variety of food and drink available all around the festival and also live music on a couple of stages. We spent an hour watching a popular local band who had all their fans dancing in sync.

Everyone was so friendly and limited English made it a fun interaction as my Japanese is rubbish........such a good time with smiles all round

ICEICEE
It has become the neon lighting of the poems of all over Japan in the winter. In fact, the Sapporo White Lantern Festival is the birthplace of Japanese neon lighting. It is held in three locations in Sapporo City, and there will be some lights and chapters during the event. At Christmas time, the Sapporo Munich Christmas Market will be held in Odori Park 2, and the lighting time of neon lighting will be extended.
As long as you walk to Odori Park, you will be attracted by the lights. Along the line, there is a Christmas market and a festival of lights. The background of the Christmas market is the Sapporo Tower, which feels like a place in the love story. The White Light Tree Festival is separated from the Christmas Market by a road. When you are surrounded by many, many lights, you will magically create a feeling of happiness. There is a Japanese song on the square, which is a Japanese TV drama.

Spring Festival in Hokkaido - Sapporo Snow Festival
❄️ Lucky with the weather, light snow, and the itinerary coincided with the Snow Festival.
⛄ Odori Park's Snow Festival focuses on snow sculptures, while Susukino's features ice sculptures. Some are exquisite, while others, like Pikachu and Doraemon, are inexplicably ugly. Personally, if you have time, it's worth a visit, but not a must-see, as domestic ice sculptures are more impressive.
🍦 Hokkaido's ice cream is indeed delicious. I can't forget the cone I had at a roadside shop in Tanukikoji today.
🍱 Other places we dined at today:
SAMA Sapporo Odori (Soup Curry) - Tasty, under 100 per person (1 set meal + 1 milkshake), worth trying. If you can't handle spicy food, choose a spice level below 5; a friend found level 6 too spicy.
Umi no Yonkai (on the 6th floor) - Fresh seafood, mostly locals dining, no pictures or Chinese on the menu. Over 400 per person, not cheap. We were a group of four, ordering boiled hairy crab, sashimi, grilled Wagyu, pan-fried fish (unknown type), steamed egg, and sake. We were about 70% full, and everyone praised the flavors.
An izakaya near Susukino, a small two-story shop with red decor. Fresh ingredients, quite good. #Hokkaido #Sapporo #HokkaidoTravel

Sapporo Snow Festival
The recent Sapporo Snow Festival activities are centered around Odori Park, which becomes lively at night with various snacks and bustling crowds.
The craftsmanship of the snow sculptures is exquisite, but in terms of scale and visual impact, the Harbin Ice Festival is more impressive.
