2024 Shigatse Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in December)
Shigatse is situated in southern Tibet at the confluence of the Yarlung Tsangpo and Nyang rivers. It is the second largest city in Tibet, located 3900 m above sea level. It was the political, religious and cultural center of southern Tibet for centuries – numerous Panchen Lama were based here. The area is known for its spectacular scenery and traditional Tibetan culture. It is also home to Mount Qomolangma, Yamdrok Lake (one of Tibet's three largest sacred lakes), the castle of Samdrubtse Dzong and Palcho Monastery.

Drive straight to the closest place to the 8,000-meter snow mountain in Tibet.
There are too many snow mountains in Tibet, but most of them are far away from the viewing platform, and photos 📷 also need to be taken with a telephoto lens. But I found a place very, very close to the 8,000-meter snow mountain. It should be the closest place for ordinary tourists to see the 8,000-meter snow mountain.
📍Dingri County Pushila Mountain Pass
This is the only way to Rongxia Township, and it is also the best viewing platform to admire Cho Oyu. It takes about 2 hours to drive from Gangga Town, and the road conditions are very good throughout the journey.
【What snow mountains can you see here🏔️】
🛻8201 meters, the world's sixth peak, Cho Oyu
🛻7952 meters, Gezhongkang Peak
🛻6666 meters, Qiaolazang Peak
✅On the way to Pushila Mountain Pass, you can admire an 8,000-meter snow mountain, Cho Oyu, and several 6,000-meter and 7,000-meter snow mountains
✅In addition to Cho Oyu, the most eye-catching is the 6666-meter Qiaolazang Snow Mountain (Figure 5). This number is too lucky for Chinese people.
✅The only way from Gangga Town to Rongxia Gully, about 20km out of Gangga Town, you can see the perspective of P2-P3, which is very suitable for taking road photos. It is recommended to use telephoto shooting
✅The accommodation conditions in Rongxia Township and Gangga Town are not good, please consider whether to stay
Travel tips ‼️
⚠️
Be sure to bring your ID card and border pass
⚠️
It's very cold under the snow mountain, you must bring a down jacket
⚠️
When you see a place close to the snow mountain, stop the car, then climb a small hill, basically it is the best position
Note❗️
Sisters, if you want to take more pictures, you can continue to walk towards the snow mountain for a while, about 1 hour is enough.
Don't come to Tibet in August! I'm telling the truth!!!
Tibet, this mysterious and magnificent land, boasts enchanting scenery. Careful planning before embarking on the journey is crucial to avoid wasting precious time.
Budget and Preparation
It is recommended to reasonably arrange your budget according to your situation. Do not be too frugal, as traveling in Tibet can be relatively expensive. If you choose to fly, immediately go to a clinic or hospital for oxygen and medication if you experience altitude sickness. Do not hope to recover by just sleeping; early treatment ensures a pleasant subsequent journey.
Ways to Enter Tibet
If you have ample time, a train sleeper is a good choice. Avoid hard seats to ensure good rest and reduce the risk of altitude sickness. After arriving in Lhasa, rest at the hotel first. Avoid excessive exercise, walking, washing your hair, bathing, and drinking alcohol to prevent altitude sickness.
Food Experience
Tibet's sweet tea is sweet and delicious, while butter tea has a salty flavor. Some friends may not be accustomed to the taste of butter tea, so try it cautiously.

Atour Hotel Shigatse, Diffuse Oxygen Supply
Atour Hotel Shigatse, Diffuse Oxygen Supply
The Atour Hotel opened in August, located on the pedestrian street of Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse. It has an underground parking lot, an independent courtyard, good service, spacious rooms, good air, air conditioning, floor heating, and diffuse oxygen supply with nasal cannula (not 24 hours). I had altitude sickness during the day, but I slept well at night. The bedding was as comfortable as ever, and it was the best night of sleep during my trip.
Don't miss Tashilhunpo Monastery when you visit Shigatse
Ganden Monastery, Drepung Monastery, and Sera Monastery (these three monasteries are located near Lhasa and are collectively known as the Three Great Monasteries of Lhasa), Tashilhunpo Monastery (located at the foot of Nima Mountain, west of Shigatse City in Tsang), Kumbum Monastery (located in Lusha'er Town, Huangzhong County, Qinghai Province, 26 km from Xining City), and Labrang Monastery (located in Xiahe County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province) are the six major monasteries of the Gelug school.
Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse was built in 1447 under the supervision of Gendun Drup, a disciple of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, and the first Dalai Lama. It is also the largest monastery in Shigatse and is known as the Little Potala Palace.
🙏🙏🙏Don't miss Tashilhunpo Monastery when you visit Shigatse
This is the residence of the Panchen Lamas of all generations and holds a very high status. If you like architectural aesthetics, the monastery uses a large area of red and white colors, fully displaying the mystery and uniqueness of Tibetan aesthetics. Here, you can find countless beautiful places to take photos 📸.
Tickets: CNY 100 in peak season, CNY 50 in off season
It is recommended to hire a guide, otherwise you will be left in the dark. There are guides designated by the scenic area at the entrance and exit of the parking lot. We hired one for CNY 200, and the guide explained for about an hour. It seems that the monks in the monastery can also explain for you, but this requires the monk to be relatively free and able to speak Mandarin.
💪💪💪Highly recommended: There is a cultural and creative store of Tashilhunpo Monastery at the exit. You must go in and have a look. The items here are all blessed by the monastery and are reasonably priced. You can buy some incense ash lacquer beads or bracelets to take home.
I bought a bracelet and a gourd made of incense ash lacquer beads.
