I visited an Anthracite(앤트러사이트) in Hannam-dong, a cafe with a modern sense of interior in an old building. The concept of the cafe is based on the regeneration of the old buildings with four locations in Seoul and one in Jeju Island. They generally don't use the word cafe very well. They use to describe themselves as coffee factories. If you check the exterior and interior of the store, you can fully understand why they use such expressions. The soft coffee they offer and the wild-feeling space have a contrasting yet exquisite balance. This place's coffee, which is made by roasting themselves, has an unforgettable aroma and taste for anyone who has ever tasted it. The only reason you can't help feeling this is because of the freshness of the coffee beans, which seem to be a factor that fills the old hours of space here. The vibes of this place, where old and fresh coexist, continue to visit and give off the attraction of staying here for a long time. Recently, a transparent media art wall was installed at the bottom of the coffee bar in the store, and the store with an even more new atmosphere where digital and analog coexist feels complete. There was a time when modern mid-century interior styles were popular in Korea for some time. Of course, there are still a lot of people who follow that style. I would like to introduce this cafe called Second House(세컨하우스#aurora located in Sindang-dong, Seoul. It has that interior vibe and adds points to the paintings and the photos which are very sensuous. This place operates as a cafe during the day and as a wine bar at night. You can eat simple foods during the day, but most people seem to visit for coffee. The artwork(main image) with yellow color from the entrance welcomes you as soon as you get in. The yellow image seems to have been planned to be related to the character with a yellow nose here. From these small things, the design-oriented person seems to have opened a cafe. The consistent yet sensual interior and prop usage were very impressive. It occurred to me that such visual language does not come from copying something, but from experience and sense. It would be memorable to go to a cafe to see pictures and photos, rather than to go there to drink coffee. It's not just because it's cool, but because of its sensuous composition and expression. Gongkhan21s(공간21s), a private cafe that looks like a family house in Cheongdam-dong. It is a two-story building and has a high floor height, so the space is very open. The interior space is divided into several spaces, and each space is enough to feel different. This place is a professional roastery cafe with a large-scale roastery installed in the cafe. They imports various beans directly and various varieties of beans are roasted here. You can also find the world's most expensive Panama Elida Estate Geisha Green-Tip Natural beans. They roast themselves and sell them in small quantities of 25 grams. It is a rare bean that is rarely distributed in Korea, so if you want to drink a really really special coffee, why don't you try it? The price is quite expensive though. The menu they are selling is very simple. You can choose between basic or limited coffee beans, then espresso, americano, or latte that’s it! The espresso specialty of Yaksu-dong, Leesarcoffee(리사르커피), has opened an additional cafe in Cheongdam-dong. This cafe, which is a basic place to drink 3-4 cups when you visit once, opened a store with the same concept in Cheongdam-dong. Taking the Italian espresso sensibility as it is, they pened a cafe larger than Yaksu-dong, which has a couple of table seats that is considerate of customers. Compared to cafes in Yaksu-dong, the long bar around the espresso machine remained the same. Apart from that, the interior was established in a darker tone. It seems to provide a comfortable feeling for people who spend time in the store by lowering the lighting. On this day, I also drank five cups of coffee, and it seems to be a great advantage of being able to enjoy a variety of espresso-based coffee at a reasonable price. I wanted to feel the newly decorated Leesarcoffee, so I sat down on the table and drank it, and like Yaksu-dong, there were many customers who drank 2-3 cups of coffee quickly at the bar. This culture is somewhat settled in Korea. I thought it was no exaggeration to say that this place plays a role in applying and settling this culture, which is likely to be only in Italy, to Korea. It is self-evident that applying and settling a new culture is very difficult. In the late afternoon, I visited Teyang Coffee(태양커피), which has a beautiful exterior of red brick and a famous Einspanner(Vienna coffee) menu. I love the sunlight coming into the store. There are no signboards outside the cafe. There are only cafes nearby, so if you look for the address, you can easily find them. Perhaps because there is no sign, the exterior of the building made of red bricks seems to be more beautiful. The inside of the cafe is small. There are only a few tables and chairs, and they are all different in shape and color. However, each chair and table fit well in one form. There is no Americano, the name of coffee in a typical Korean cafe, but it is sold under the Australian coffee menu name Long black. It is also impressive that Flat white and Italian cappuccino are on the menu. On this day, I ordered Einspanner, the signature menu of this cafe. There are three types of Einspanner that are sold: combination of water and cream, milk and cream, and cream. Since I am a milk lover, I ordered a combination of milk and cream, and I liked the combination of sweet cream, savory milk, and bitter coffee. I felt like I was relieved of the tiredness that I had accumulated all day after visiting at late lunch. The sunlight entering the cafe was warm, so the coffee seemed more satisfying. Coffee Ffound(커피파운드), located on the hillside of Sindang-dong next to the Hotel Shilla, despite the difficulty of parking and difficulty of going, it was crowded with many people during the lunch time I visited. The red brick building has a large window structure on the first floor, so the sunlight coming through the window is very good. It would be nice to visit and bring a laptop to work at leisurely hours. Perhaps because it is a place that deals with specialty coffee, various beans from around the world are displayed on the wall of the cafe and can be purchased. I drank Flat White on this day, and I chose ONA's Raspberry Candy beans. ONA coffee is a blend coffee used by Australian barista champion Sasa Sestic. Flat White feels so good when you drink it as soon as a barista makes it. So it seems that Flat White's latte art has never been photographed properly. I loved the unique sweet smell of berries when I drank it, and the creamy texture. The space is good and the coffee is delicious, so people must come here on their own. There must be something sensitively attracted to it to appeal to people. It seems to be very subtle and difficult to find what people like. I am so into Hanok(Korean traditional house) these days. I think it's because I feel comfortable being there for some reason. I visited Onion Anguk(어니언 안국), a cafe made by remodeling a Hanok. This place is loved by many people for its well-made interior design. That is why it is especially famous as a tourist must to spot for foreigners. It is designed with the concept of drinking coffee on a Korean style cushion and sitting table on the wooden floor without Western style tables and chairs, and it is not awkward for foreigners at all. Rather, it seems to be a unique element that best reflects the characteristics of this place and can experience Korean culture. In other words, I think this place is giving people who want to experience Korean culture a leisurely time and space while eating coffee and bread. In fact, the Anguk of Onion is the third cafe of Onion. The Seongsu branch, which was built by remodeling the abandoned factory, and Mia branch, which coexists with post office were all designed to match the characteristics of each region while maintaining the existing building. Leaving the form alone seems to convey the original vibes and emotions, so all Onion's cafes feel sensuous. Personally, I am always on the lookout for unique dessert spots in Korea. When you're living abroad, it can be hard to find that spot that brings you a little closer to home. If you're living in Korea and venture out near Gapyeong, you need to try a spot called Malddong Donuts. The outside welcomes you with vivid rainbow colors. When you enter inside, you feel as if you're a kid again. The playground setting with flashing neon lights and plenty of photo spots is enough of a reason to try this place. But what about the food? So, this donut shop has cases of fancy donuts with various toppings that matcha, oreo, sprinkles, and more. They also have coffee and other drinks. If you want a sugar high, you can get a milkshake to go with your donut. The milkshakes come in chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. They have more of a frappuccino consistency but it still hits the spot. Just an FYI, the milkshakes are topped off with a decorative donut. Would I recommend this place? Absolutely make the trek at least once just to say you tried it. It's a little far out in the countryside.
