Taiwan’s most popular old street👣
Ironically, I never heard nor knew about Tamsui Old Street until my local friend took me there during my trip. The street is well known in Taiwan for its historical past and local delicacies. My friend told me that there was initially a proposal to expand the railway system with a part of it running through the old street, but the project was modified so as preserve the street which has been there for more than a century since the Qing Dynasty.
Some local delicacies are the iron eggs and Agei (transparent noodles wrapped in tofu).Since it’s a coastal village, there’s an abundance of seafood snacks along the street: baked squid, fried fish, shrimp rolls… I defo recommend the seafood there. Everything I ate was fresh and delicious! There are also lots of options around if you feel like shopping. I also wandered in the alleys along the street to explore around. The street was pretty crowded, especially on a Saturday afternoon.
How to go ➡️ We took the MRT to Tamsui Station and walked for a few minutes.

Master Shilin
@master.shilin is a new-ish Taiwanese restaurant near my office. As the restaurant has limited seats, they mostly do takeaways. The extensive menu, affordable prices and huge portions make it a good lunch option, but the best part is that they are open till late (for us OLs to buy OT snacks maybe?) 🤪
[Shilin Taiwanese Salted Chicken]
As it was our first time ordering their fried chicken, we weren’t expecting there to be so many pieces, especially for this price. The juicy flesh and crispy skin was so delectable that I kept stuffing one piece after another into my mouth despite the mildly spicy seasoning. But the portion was simply too big - we couldn’t even finish half of the whole thing and had to bring the rest home 😂
[Taiwanese Style Three Cup Chicken]
For those that have never heard of ‘three cup chicken’, it's basically chicken pieces stewed in rice wine, sesame oil and soy sauce. The tender chicken glazed in the thick flavorful mixture went super well with the rice. A separate bowl of brined cabbage was included in the set, making it super worth the money 💰
[Crispy Spiced Salt Okra]
Not a huge fan of okra but my friend insisted on ordering this. After trying some, I was impressed that each fried piece was coated in a light batter so that the airy crunchy texture was retained. The natural grassy flavor was quite refreshing especially after gobbling up all that salted chicken.
[Shilin Bottle of Milk Tea/Coffee with Tea]
The instagrammable bottled drinks had a familiar HK-style taste . The milk tea was ultra smooth and silky while the yuen yeung (coffee with tea) was a perfect combination of bitter and sweet. 🫖
