An absolute highlight of my recent trip to New Zealand for Chinese New Year, The Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland. NZ is famous for its volcanic and geothermal activity and there’s no better place to experience it than this, I’ve never seen anything like it. There are guided walk ways that take you around some Of New Zealand’s most active and most beautiful geothermal areas. The main feature is the champagne pool, a huge lake constantly bubbling and emitting overwhelming clouds of steam. The pool is quite shallow and you can see beautiful underwater detailing, also the range or colours in the mud and water around it is stunning. If you get close enough you can be surrounded by steam and experience the heat, id advise closing your mouth as the sulphur makes the experience very eggy. Follow the trails that you want to do, we did the two main trails and it took us under 2 hours. It was a very easy walk but it can be tough in the heat, so pack sun cream and water as there are no facilities along the route. I was amazed at the colours in the water and how different the thermal outlets can be, some made of mud, some are super hot water and others seem to just be tiny cracks in sheer rock. It was one of the pricier experiences on the trip but totally worth it! It also has a very nice gift shop and restaurant if you want to recharge after the walk Entrance fee is $45NZ / £22 It’s open 8:30 - 4:30 and last entry is 3PM ‼️ this is an active geothermal area and it can be very dangerous, please stick to the designated walk ways and don’t touch the water!! The Ohinemuri river is on the northern island of New Zealand at the base of the Coromandel peninsula, I stopped off during a visit for Chinese New Year. The river is stunning with calm, clear waters that meander around the hills and mountains in the area. The road that follows the river is a beautiful scenic journey but the corners can be quite scary, so drive slow! The river is famous for its historical role as a gold mining area, helping to fuel the development of the local area. The Karangahake Gorge Historic walkway allows you to see what remains of this industry. There are ruins of buildings, leftover equipment and of course the infamous railway bridges and tunnel. The railway tunnel is now a walking trial and links many of the local walking trail, but be careful the tunnel can be cold, wet and dark and is also popular with local cyclists! Upon entering the hot spring you will be welcomed by the amazing Japanese designs along the pathways. It is really very nice indeed. There are baths and foot baths by bringing the hot spring water from the original well and mixing it with normal temperature water until there is a level of heat that the body can soak in. To start my adventure to New Zealand for Chinese New Year I headed on a week long road trip with my brother. First stop was Hamilton about 2 hours south of Auckland, we stopped off at the Hamilton gardens. I hadn’t ever heard of this place but I was really surprised by it, it’s an award winning garden with manicured areas from all around the world. You need a map to get around as this place is a maze! Each area has a small entrance with many little paths leading off into different gardens. There are gardens from all around the world with India, Japan and China being highlights for me. Each garden has its own focal point and features including water features, small authentic buildings and modern art pieces. Going into this with no expectations really blew me away, and we were in there for hours and made sure we explored every garden. Cataract Gorge is where the three rivers of Launceston meet: the Tamar, the Northern Esk and the Southern Esk. We took the Tiger Bus on our way to the River Explorer. Getting off at the Royal Park, we soon arrived at the entrance point to Cataract Gorge. The Cataract Walk is an easy 15-minute stroll leading to the Gorge Basin. As we walked on, we saw the area gradually opening up to a nature colored in chestnut and verdant. The river basin was in greenish brown, seeming to suggest a fertility that sustained many kinds of wild lives. The chairlift claimed itself to be the longest such lift in the world. Under the warm winter sunlight the Tamar River glowed, reflections of light glimmered against a very dark-colored water. There were yachts and sailboats at the dock, together making an impression of a waterfront leisure. We sat down for an Indian lunch at the very far end of the riverside. On New Year’s Day 2025, I took a beautiful hike around Riviera Bay also called Ghajn Tuffieha on the Mediterranean island of Malta. It was a beautifully sunny day and warmer than usual for the time of year so I even took a quick dip in the water, although it was a little cold. As there can be quite heavy showers of rain in the winter in Malta, the hills around the bay were looking exceptionally green. The forests around the area are refreshing and beautiful as well, with little elevation changes. 📍12 Apostles Spend the 2nd day driving from Apollo Bay to visit the 12 Apostles, to visit magnificent headland and bays with prominent stacks, formed by corrosion. It is exactly as pictured in geography textbooks.
