Italy is a happy and free country with various festivals. Each district has their own features in Italy, such as Carnival, the Venice Film Festival, Siena’s Horse Racing Festival, Milan Fashion Week, and the Milan Furniture Fair, etc.
Every January 6th, the Epiphany is celebrated, which is a religious festival. In modern times however, it has become some sort of children’s day. It is said that on the evening of the 5th, a witch riding on a broom will come in from the chimney of each house's fireplace to give gifts to the children, and well-behaved children will get a stocking filled with gifts. However, the witch of Venice is unique because she rows around rather than riding a broom. On January 6th, a group of brawny men dressed in witch costumes race on the Grand Canal, which is a very interesting spectacle.
On every February and March, Carnivals are held in many places across Italy, and the Carnival of Venice is the best known. Visitors from all over the world come to Venice at this time to share in the fun. People in strange costumes gather around the Piazza San Marco, or stroll in the streets and alleys. Everyone will be infected by this happy atmosphere, regardless of whether they're men, women or children. During the Carnival, various activities are held in Venice, including concerts and dramas, etc. Also, most of them are free!
The Milan Furniture Fair is held every April in Milan, and can be regarded as the “Oscar” event for world furniture design and exhibitions. It has been held more than 50 times since 1961. Due to its world-class furniture designs and exhibitions, suppliers and designers from all over the world set up exhibition booths there. The annual exhibits will become a popular trend in the future. In addition to professionals, many visitors also go there to feast their eyes.
Maggio Musicale Fiorentino was founded in 1933 and is a very ancient music festival in Florence. In 1933, the Italian conductor Vittorio Gui founded the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, which was inspired by the Salzburg Festival. In addition to its classical repertoire, many innovative and international elements are included. If you are a classical music enthusiast, please do not miss it.
Palio di Siena is an ancient and lively festival in Siena which is held every 2nd July and 16th August in the summer. The scenery there is absolutely magnificent. There is a gorgeous costume parade before the race, and the entire event is extremely vibrant. 10 jockeys who are selected for the final competition are dressed in different colors representing the different blocks of Siena and ride around the square after the event starts. If a jockey falls from their horse, then he is out. The most exciting thing about this race is that all jockeys race without a saddle, which greatly increases its difficulty and complexity.
The Venice International Film Festival was founded in 1932, and was the first international film festival in the world. It is thus regarded as the “Father of International Film Festivals”. It is held from every August to September on Lido Isle. Together with the Cannes International Film Festival in France, and the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany, they are regarded as the three major international film festivals in Europe. The highest award is the Golden Lion Award. During this period, Lido Isle is very busy with the gathering of global movie stars and directors, etc. More and more Chinese movie stars have set foot on this island, and if you visit Venice this time, maybe you will be able to take a photo with your idol.
Umbria Jazz Festival is one of the most important music festivals in the world. It has been held every July since 1973 and lasts for a week. Many people in Italy prefer Jazz, so this festival attracts people from all over the country. On the stage that's temporarily built in Perugia, all kinds of Jazz performances are shown during the festival. The singing on stage is loud and clear, and the people under the stage are all very animated. People swing leisurely with the music while holding beers in their hands.
One-third of Italy’s chocolate is from the Piedmont region. The most famous city is Turin. The city known as the “Chocolate Center” holds a chocolate show every March. The stalls with more than hundreds of chocolate manufactures and private stalls settle in the Piazza Vittorio and the smell of chocolate fills the entire square. Some stall owners also make hot chocolate, put bananas and other fruits into a chocolate pot, wrap them with thick chocolate, and take them out to cool down. The result is unimaginably delicious.
