MENCON | Mendelssohn Reimagined | ARCO feat. CoMA | Pianodrome

Mar 22, 2025 (UTC+0)
Edinburgh
Arts
Orchestra
MenCon MenCon is a radical reinterpretation of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto Op.64, wherein the solo part remains completely intact (realised by violinist Chihiro Ono), and the orchestral parts are reinterpreted and recomposed by a chamber orchestra of creative musicians from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds, led by composer Neil Luck. The work is chameleonic, unrepeatable, inclusive, unpredictable, creative, brilliantly risky, and probably (possibly) exactly how Mendelssohn himself would have wanted it to be played in the 21st century! Different every time, MenCon was originally realised by Neil’s ensemble ARCO, following a similar experiment with the Beethoven Violin concerto some years earlier. It has also however, been realised by Chihiro and Neil with conservatoire students, improvising orchestras, and other new music ensembles. The piece has also been released as an album by Birmingham Record Company. For this event, Neil and Chihiro will be joined by CoMA Glasgow, an experimental collective open to players of all abilities who focus on exploring and interpreting unusual and avantgarde contemporary music scores. With monthly gatherings at Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA), the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) and also online, the group welcomes musicians and sound-makers of all abilities. This includes professionals, students, amateurs, composers, instrumentalists and sound-artists so if you like what you hear, you can get involved as everybody has something to contribute! In this event, Peter Burns and Rob Robertson share some of the most memorable, significant and sometimes quirky fixtures that have been played at Murrayfield over the past 100 years. This will be an insightful, fun and fascinating account of some of the greatest moments in Scottish rugby. About the speakers Peter Burns is the co-author of ‘This is Murrayfield: 100 years of history in 100 matches’. Peter has been a sports editor for nearly twenty years. Literary Arts
We are delighted to be welcoming artist and debut novelist, Seth Insua, to the shop on Thursday 20th March, at 7pm, as we celebrate the publication of his blisteringly emotional, searingly powerful novel, Human, Animal, about one family's struggle to understand each other in a rapidly changing world. Dairy farmer George Calvert is fighting to keep the family business afloat. Worried about the future but resistant to change, he refuses to face the reality of his failing farm, his elderly mother's declining health and his troubled relationship with his youngest son, Tom. Newly returned from university, Tom isolates himself in his childhood bedroom, guarding the truth of his burgeoning identity. When animal rights activists break into the cowshed one morning and Tom appears to side with the protesters, father and son lock horns. As the Calverts begin to unravel, a decades-old secret surfaces - one that might rip them apart completely, or finally unite them. Seth will be in conversation with our Event Manager, Matthew Land, who grew up on a dairy farm in Wales. - Doors: 6.30pm, event starts: 7pm, please arrive early to secure a good seat. Tickets are £3and there is a Ticket & Book option which includes a signed copy of Human, Animal. The bookshop has level access, events are seated and speakers use microphones. If you have any concerns about accessibility, please do get in touch and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. Professors Katherine Halsey and Matthew Sangster: EDITION Spring Lecture | 1.06 Project Room, 50 George Square

Edinburgh
Arts
Literary Arts
About the eventThe Edition Spring Lecture will be given jointly by Katherine Halsey, Professor of English Studies at the University of Stirling, and Matthew Sangster, Professor of Romantic Studies, Fantasy and Cultural History at the University of Glasgow. It is titled 'Towards a True History of Reading Lives: Borrowing in Scotland, 1747-1837', and will include a discussion chaired by Professor Penny Fielding (University of Edinburgh). It will be held in the Project Room 1.06, 50 George Square at 4pm to 5:30pm. The lecture will be preceded from 2pm until 3pm by an optional workshop at the Centre for Research Collections (located on the sixth floor of the Main Library on George Square). This workshop is titled 'Edinburgh University Library’s Borrowing Registers'. Capacity for this workshop is limited, so please book separately for it and the Autumn lecture below. About the lecture - 'Towards a True History of Reading Lives: Borrowing in Scotland, 1747-1837'Histories of reading have often relied by necessity on anecdotal accounts by relatively elite readers. However, the affordances of digital technologies allow us to interpret previously intractable institutional manuscripts to provide a far richer evidentiary basis. Structuring their lecture around two key reading concepts from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, ‘instruction’ and ‘amusement’, Professors Halsey and Sangster will explore how readers in Scotland engaged with library books as pupils, students, professionals, members of communities and leisure readers. They will demonstrate how library borrowing records reveal rich, complex, idiosyncratic readers, liberated rather than bound by the libraries with which they interacted, ranging far beyond the ostensible purposes of their institutions in their diverse engagements with print. About the workshop - 'Edinburgh University Library’s Borrowing Registers'This workshop will introduce participants to the borrowing registers of Edinburgh University Library, one of the largest surviving collections of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century borrowing records in Scotland. It will explore the borrowings of the students, professors and townspeople who used the library for a wide range of intellectual (and less intellectual) purposes. During the workshop, attendees will examine the content and material form of the registers, discussing the ways in which ideological assumptions are encoded in the institutional practices represented. They will also trace some of the rich reading lives revealed in the registers’ pages. If you choose to attend the workshop, please remember to provide your name as you enter the Main Library so you can be admitted. About EditionEdition (formerly the Centre for the History of the Book) is a collaborative initiative at the University of Edinburgh supporting new research in all aspects of the history of the book, from traditional forms of bibliography, codicology and textual editing to the latest theoretical and digital innovations. Access and recording Please note that this lecture is a free, in-person event held on the University of Edinburgh campus. It will not be live streamed - tickets are for access to the venue. However, the lecture may be photographed and/or recorded and added to the University website afterwards. If you would prefer not to appear in any recordings, please contact us in advance or speak to us on the day. It's not a problem. After the event We may like to contact you in the future to hear what you thought of the lecture and invite you to other Edition events. Please tell us at the time of booking if you are happy for us to do that. Information Source: School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures | eventbrite

Explore the creation and use of maps during the Second World War. Discover their use through personal stories, photography, and memorabilia. Between 1939 and 1945 over 3 billion maps were produced for the Allied, Soviet and German forces. Used to navigate the jungles of south-east Asia or for devising an escape plan, the maps on display are now mementoes. Maps kept alongside medals and photographs to say ‘I was there.’ You'll find aerial photography, war diaries, and even a fashionable dress made from escape and evasion maps. The exhibition introduces us to a Prisoner of War, an RAF pilot, a Brigadier and an army chaplain through the maps they kept as a memory of their war service.

It's 1882 and the streets of Manchester are crackling with energy, youth and violence. As workers pour into Ancoats to power the Industrial Revolution, 50,000 people are crammed into one square mile. The mills rumble thunderously day and night. The air is thick with smoke. Life is lived large and lived on the street. This is the world's very first industrial suburb and the young mill workers form the very first urban gangs, fighting over their territory with belts, fists and knives. Invisible in history, their lives, deaths, loves, lusts and defiant energy tell stories that will repeat and repeat over the decades that follow. Dance
In Georgian Edinburgh, women’s contributions to music and dance—whether as composers, performers, teachers or patrons were often overshadowed, yet their influence was undeniable. Join Alena Shmakova and Frances Scott as they explore the pioneering women of Enlightenment Scotland’s performing arts scene—from the Lady Directresses of Dance Assemblies to the musicians and dancers who helped shape Edinburgh’s cultural landscape. Discover the dances once performed and taught by Marianne Violante and Sofia Parker, as well as the music by talented amateurs like Magdalene Stirling or professionals as Sophia Dussek, whose compositions once filled the city’s salons and concert halls. Through music and dance, this lecture-recital brings to light the often-overlooked women who helped shape Scotland’s artistic legacy. The programme is made possible through funding by the University of the Highlands and Islands Student Development Fund, funded by REC, the Early Dance Circle and support by the European Association for Dance History. Alena Shmakova has studied historical dance since 2006, training with the Historical Dance Society, Nordic Baroque Dancers, and other practitioners. Since 2013, she has taught historical dance in Edinburgh, performing at venues such as Holyrood Palace, Stirling Castle, and Early Dance Festivals. As a researcher, she has received funding to study female patronage in Scotland and the early 19th-century Strathspey style, presenting her work at major dance history conferences. Women in Dance in Scotland, 1500–1800 is part of her research for an MLitt in History at the University of the Highlands and Islands. Alena also teaches historical dance and dance history through the Edinburgh Adult Education programme. Frances Scott was trained at the Royal Northern College of Music as a pianist before joining the music staff of Scottish Ballet. She then moved to Covent Garden as a pianist with the Royal Ballet Company. Fortunate enough to own a harpsichord, she also worked with groups such as Kist o’ Music and Bruntsfield Baroque, giving concerts in St Cecilia’s Hall and the Georgian House. Her interests include Scottish music in the 18th century and female composers and performers. Information Source: St Cecilia's Hall, The University of Edinburgh | eventbrite

Welcome to the Natural Art Material Making Workshop! Date: Saturday, August 14th Time: 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM Location: Wasps Riverside House Join me for a half day workshop learning simple processes for making botanical non-toxic inks, sustainable watercolour paints & liquid charcoal for creative projects! We will be working with locally sourced organic materials including garden plants, ethically foraged wild plants & food waste. The goal of my studio and my practice is to have as little impact on the environment at possible - which includes eliminating toxins/chemical run off when I wash my brushes. The labels on store-bought paints produced on mass never provide us with information about how something was made, the origin of raw materials, who produced it and under which conditions, what it contains, and what impact it had on our environment during the manufacturing process! I constantly found myself questioning the ethics behind my materials which is why I started making my own and really hung to the connection I was making to my surroundings in the process. In this workshop we will cover making: Botanical Inks: Natural Inks are a fantastic eco-friendly, non-toxic alternative to petroleum based inks. These can be used for drawing, writing and painting. Liquid Charcoal: Liquid Charcoal is my new favourite drawing medium.. It can be made easily at home with charred plant matter. Each will give a slightly different black tone. Liquid charcoal has a consistency similar to gouache but can be watered down to give different shades and structures. It has the appearance of a charcoal drawing upon drying, it’s malleable and easy to move, is a great dust-free alternative to Charcoal.. and it’s completely Vegan. Watercolour Paint: Watercolour paint is paint made from dry pigment mixed with a binder (Gum Arabic). Natural Pigments can be found everywhere, with many of these hues originating from the earth itself: the rich tones of soil, clay, sand, or stone. Materials and refreshments provided, please contact me directly with any allergies ie. Peanuts. **I have one space at a reduced rate available for a student or low-income participant. Again please contact me directly via email to enquire at libbymitchell1994@me.com. Information Source: Libby Mitchell | eventbrite
