Dujiangyan

Dujiangyan is located on the Min River to the west of Dujiangyan City, Chengdu. It is a large-scale project system consisting of the headwork (Yuzui, Feishayan, and Baopingkou) and water diversion channels at all levels in the irrigation area. In the late period of King Zhao of Qin, Li Bing, the governor of Shu County, summarized the experience of water control of his predecessors and organized the people on both sides of the Min River to build Dujiangyan. Feishayan was built in the Tang Dynasty. Dujiangyan is the only ancient grand water conservancy project in the world that has survived to this day and is characterized by dam-free water diversion. It makes full use of the local geographical conditions of high northwest and low southeast, and according to the special topography, water veins, and water potential at the outlet of the river, it diverts water without a dam and irrigates by gravity, so that the dike, water diversion, flood discharge, sand discharge, and flow control are interdependent and form a system, ensuring the full play of the comprehensive benefits of flood control, irrigation, water transport, and social water use. The dam has been in use for more than 2,250 years and is becoming more and more effective. Dujiangyan is an important part of the World Cultural Heritage, World Natural Heritage, and World Irrigation Engineering Heritage.
