Shanghai Centre Theatre

Shanghai Centre Theatre is the first foreign-invested comprehensive building complex in Shanghai, located at 1376 Nanjing West Road, Shanghai. The theatre, with its unique architectural style, has become a symbol of modernization in Shanghai. It is equipped with complete sound and lighting equipment, and the stage area is 153 square meters (17 meters * 9 meters). The Shanghai Centre Theatre has an atrium (900 square meters) that can host various business and public relations activities, such as press conferences, product demonstrations, small exhibitions, cocktail parties, and banquets. The theatre is modeled after the Marquis Theatre on Broadway in the United States. It is designed with a two-story auditorium and can accommodate 991 spectators (731 in the main hall and 260 in the balcony). With its complete facilities, it provides a venue for various art forms, including drama, opera, ballet, and symphony concerts. Shanghai Centre was designed by John Portman & Associates and built by Kajima Corporation. It opened in April 1990. The entire building consists of three towers and a group of buildings. Jiushi Corporation originated from the "94 Project." On August 5, 1986, the State Council approved Shanghai to expand the use of foreign capital through self-borrowing and self-repayment to strengthen urban infrastructure construction, accelerate industrial technological transformation, enhance export earning capacity, and develop the tertiary industry and tourism. The first batch of foreign capital utilization was expanded by USD 3.2 billion, of which USD 1.4 billion was used for urban infrastructure construction, USD 1.3 billion for industrial technological transformation, and USD 500 million for the tertiary industry and tourism. This policy was called the "94 Project." To ensure the success of the "94 Project," the Shanghai Municipal Government made a significant decision at that time: to try to use economic means to establish a specialized economic entity to unify the funding, adjustment, and management of the "94 Project." On December 30, 1987, Shanghai Jiushi Corporation was established, named after the homophonic pronunciation of "94."
