Explore the Enchanting Castle Howard

Located about 30 kilometers from York, Castle Howard is our next destination after leaving Chatsworth House. We are truly captivated by English castles. Initially, we planned to visit the filming location of Downton Abbey, but due to its limited opening hours and photography restrictions, we opted for Castle Howard instead. It's one of the few castles where photography is allowed inside. Surprisingly, Castle Howard isn't crowded with tourists, so even during the National Day holiday, we practically had the place to ourselves for photos, making the visit worthwhile. Castle Howard is a popular filming location for many British dramas, including the renowned 'Brideshead Revisited.' Despite its name, Castle Howard is not a castle but a quintessential English estate. Whether you call it a garden or a castle, it is often hailed as one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. Built by the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, Charles Howard, the Howard family still owns it today. The Howard family is a prominent aristocratic family in the UK. Situated about 15 miles east of York, Castle Howard spans 6,000 hectares, including farms, forests, orchards, gardens, lakes, and a mausoleum-style architectural complex at its center. Unlike the typical 17th-century English estates that face south, Castle Howard's main facade faces north. The most striking feature is the central hall, occupying 515 square meters and standing 20 meters high, with a classic Baroque dome. The columns, vaults, and walls are adorned with exquisite carvings and paintings. The chapel's stained glass is a masterpiece, renovated by Lord Howard, the then First Lord of the Admiralty, between 1870 and 1875. Light streams through the high windows, creating a dazzling interior. If you're traveling to the UK, don't miss this enchanting place! Transportation: From York's Station Avenue, take a bus directly to Castle Howard. The round-trip ticket costs £10, and a child's ticket (ages 5-16) is £5. The journey takes between 50 minutes to 1 hour and 20 minutes. Show your bus ticket when purchasing attraction tickets for a discount. Alternatively, take a train from York to Malton, the nearest station to Castle Howard, and then take a taxi to the site. The train ride is faster, taking about 25 minutes. A taxi from Malton station to Castle Howard costs around £12. Driving yourself is the most convenient option! Tickets: £19.5 per person, including garden access. #CastleHoward #YorkshireTravel #JayChouWedding
