Jiulongtan Natural Scenic Area is located in Shuanglin Village, Xinglong County. The scenic area mainly consists of Jiulongtan Grand Canyon and Antelope Canyon, with a total length of about 8 kilometers and a width of 10---30 meters. The cliffs on both sides are straight up and down, with the highest reaching more than 100 meters. The scenic area covers an area of about 30 square kilometers and is the back mountain of the Feng Shui forbidden area behind the Qing Dongling. The mountain is in a semi-primitive forest secondary state and is known as the 'Green Treasure House of East Beijing'. The scenic area is a cliff valley type natural scenic area, with crisscrossing canyons, high mountains, dense forests, deep pool waters, and connected streams and pools, known for its 'canyons and deep pools'. Along the valley, there are nine deep pools distributed in tiers, hence named Jiulongtan after the nine sons of the dragon. Here, the mountains are high and the forests are dense, the peaks are strange and the rocks are beautiful, the canyons crisscross, and the flowing streams in the dense forest, with the chirping of birds, are the most beautiful scenery of summer. The pool water is clear to the bottom, just like a small Jiuzhaigou in the north. Jiulongtan Scenic Area consists of Antelope Canyon, Jiulongtan Canyon, and Laojun Cave Canyon. Among them, the most famous is the Taiji Bagua Well, which is 8.6 meters deep and can be called one of the wonders of Jiulongtan. The Taiji Bagua Well is dry, with intense heat inside during the harsh winter, and cold condensation and ice formation in the summer. This well integrates the changes of yin and yang, the functions of water and fire, the differences of ice and carbon, warm in winter, and cold in summer, with the spiritual spring of the earth's veins, mysterious and unpredictable, hence called Taiji Bagua Well. It is said that after Pangu opened the heavens and the earth in ancient times, he transformed into the sun, moon, mountains, rivers, and other things, including a giant dragon that lived in the dragon's nest in the sea, and had one daughter and nine sons. Later, due to the sea turning into mulberry fields and the sea moving eastward, the Dragon King, before moving east with the sea, did not want his children to be tired along the way, and since the nine sons had not yet transformed into true dragon forms, they could not all follow. Therefore, he created nine dragon pools outside the dragon's nest for his children to live in, and transformed his own scales into creatures such as turtles, antelopes, eagles, fish, shrimps, snakes, etc., to guard the dragon pools, and they have been guarding them to this day. Although the legend is fictitious, there are indeed Dragon Nest Village and Jiulongtan as evidence. Xinglong County was indeed submerged in the sea in prehistoric times, known as the ancient Liao Sea. The 'Red Rock Ladder' around Hongshilan Village, 3 kilometers south of the county town, has been identified by geologists as marine sedimentary rocks.
