Exploring The Karst of Postojna Cave@Slovenia
Postojna Cave is one of Slovenia’s most famous and stunning natural attractions, located near the town of Postojna. It is part of a massive karst cave system stretching over 20 kilometers, with about 5.3 kilometers accessible to visitors. Known for its underground railway—the only one of its kind in the world—the tour begins with a 2-kilometer train ride through a series of mesmerizing chambers and formations, followed by a guided walk to explore stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones.
Key highlights of the cave include:
1. The Brilliant: A dazzling white stalagmite that serves as the symbol of Postojna Cave.
2. The Proteus or Olm (“Human Fish”): A rare cave-dwelling amphibian found exclusively in this ecosystem.
3. The Concert Hall: A vast chamber with excellent acoustics, often used for performances.
The cave maintains a cool year-round temperature of 8–10°C, so warm clothing is recommended.

👍️Must-Visit Attraction: Postojna Cave is the largest tourist cave in Europe and a top tourist destination in Slovenia. It is endowed by nature with towering mountains, babbling rivers, and vast underground plains, earning the title 'Queen of the Underground World.'
It is home to the world's first cave railway.
In April 1818, cave lamplighter Luka Čeč discovered the most spectacular part of Postojna Cave. The following year, it was developed into a tourist cave, attracting a continuous stream of visitors. Over the next few decades, people sought a suitable way for tourists to explore the cave more easily under the light of flashlights.
On June 16, 1872, the first recorded Postojna Cave railway officially opened, with cave guides pulling two carriages named 'Phaetons' (each carrying four tourists) through the cave.

This cave is enormous! We took a mini “train ride” at the beginning inside the cave, then walked around with the audio guide, then hopped back in the train. Time in the cave is amazing.
