Qiantong Ancient Town: A Hidden Timeless Sanctuary in Southern Ningbo
Qiantong Ancient Town is like a poetic landscape painting, exuding an ancient and profound charm. The winding bluestone paths stretch out, with intricately carved beams and painted eaves between the houses, as if every detail softly whispers the traces of a hundred years. The town's water system crisscrosses, with clear streams flowing through the alleys, reflecting the gray tiles and white walls, presenting a scene of a paradise on earth. The slow-paced life in the ancient town is captivating, with folk customs and cuisine complementing each other, the aroma of pastries and tofu lingering in the quiet alleys. Being there feels like stepping into a journey through time, making one savor its tranquility and the passage of time.

The Poetic Charm of Qiantong Ancient Town through the Lens of Chen Yifei
In the long river of time, there is an ancient town that quietly waits, and that is Qiantong. Here, it is not only a meeting point of history and modernity, but also a perfect example of the fusion of art and life. Chen Yifei's lens, like a pair of wise eyes, captures the unique charm of Qiantong Ancient Town, making it an eternal classic.
Walking into Qiantong is like traveling through a tunnel of time and space. Every bluestone slab and every carved wooden window tells a story of a thousand years. The streets and alleys of the ancient town are winding and meandering, like a maze that is fascinating, but inadvertently, it takes you into a vivid picture of the water town in Jiangnan.
Chen Yifei's shooting location is undoubtedly the most moving footnote of Qiantong. In his lens, every corner of the ancient town is full of poetry. Whether it is the layers of mist on the river in the morning light or the mottled light and shadow under the eaves of the old house at sunset, he captures it vividly, making people yearn for it. In Chen Yifei's lens, Qiantong Ancient Town is no longer just a relic of history, but has become a pure land in the hearts of modern people, an ideal place to place the soul and find poetic dwelling, and also his final work in art.

Ninghai, this severely underrated coastal city!
🌊 Ninghai has truly become my favorite summer vacation spot for taking the kids and escaping the heat in recent years. With mountains on one side and the sea on the other, plus delicious seafood, the best part is the super comfortable temperatures in the mornings and evenings. You don't even need to turn on the air conditioner, it's much cooler than the city. 😎
🚗 Recommended self-driving itinerary (1 hour from Ningbo city, 2 hours from Hangzhou):
DAY1: Ninghai Shuanglin - Liya Luo Water Park - (Qiantong Ancient Town) - Hot Spring Hotel
DAY2: Yancang Mountain Waterfall - Qiangjiao Town - Return
Day1: Departure🛫 - Hotel🏨
Afternoon: Ninghai Shuanglin
The whole way is filled with babbling streams, you can just find a dam to go down and play in the water, it's simply a water paradise.
Evening🌆: Nearby Liya Luo Water Park
The weather is not hot, especially suitable for children to play, and the online ticket prices are super affordable.
Night: You can soak in the Ninghai hot springs♨️ at the hotel or take a dip in the hotel swimming pool.
Day2:
Morning: Yancang Mountain Waterfall (free, 1 hour is enough)
This place is super natural, with many pools where children can play in the water. Zhang Ruoyun's "Sword Snow Stride" was filmed here, and the waterfall is great for photos.
Noon: Qiangjiao Town (have lunch and take some photos)
This place is known as the little Jeju of Ningbo, the coastal road is really photogenic, it's beautiful! There are also many cafes along the road in Qiangjiao Town, with greenery on one side and the sea on the other.
Afternoon: Return
Other attractions:
1. Qiantong Ancient Town (free entry at night)
2. Longgong Ancient Village, with ancient houses and stone roads, the ancient village is very beautiful.
3. Xiyou Temple, a temple hidden in the mountains, with a pagoda and Buddha statues built on the mountain, perfect for stunning photos.
🎈 Come to Ninghai and start a pleasant trip with your kids, let them have fun between the mountains and waters. 😉

The low-key Ninghai County
By chance, I came to Ninghai County. As a native northerner, Ninghai is completely different from the county towns I had in mind. With its natural landscape of seven parts mountains, one part water, and two parts fields, the air is humid, and everywhere is lush and green, filled with the fragrance of birds and flowers. The faint scent of camphor and osmanthus permeates the entire city.
:Scenery: I only visited Qiantong Ancient Town. Having visited some ancient towns before, what makes this one special is its lack of strong commercial atmosphere. It has a rich water system, with small streams and steps in front of every household, which were probably used for washing clothes and vegetables in the past. Here, every house has carved beams, and every household has running water. Walking on the stone-paved roads, you can hear the sound of flowing water. Open the window to see the river, open the door to see the bridge. Staying in a local B&B should be very beautiful and particularly quiet.
Food: If you want to eat mountain delicacies, you can enjoy them to your heart's content. Local friends recommended us to Guoping Restaurant. Ninghai has both mountain and sea delicacies. The seafood has a light but very fresh taste. Maibing is a specialty, whether sweet or salty, it has a faint seafood flavor.
It is said that there are also Razor Clam Festival, Jumping Fish Festival, Tourism Festival... and they just held a marathon.
In 'Xu Xiake's Travel Notes', Ninghai is the starting point. There is Xiake Avenue, parks, etc. here. He should be the first-generation travel blogger, haha. In short, Ninghai County is an underrated city. The nationally renowned Deli Stationery is a local giant here. Not only is the economy strong, but tourism also has unique advantages, making it worth a day's stay to experience it carefully.

Qiantong Ancient Town
Qiantong Ancient Town covers an area of 68 square kilometers, with a population of 26,000. It is an ancient town in the south of the Yangtze River with a long history, profound cultural accumulation, and a unique geographical environment. It is the largest settlement of the Tong surname in the south of the Yangtze River, preserving a complete set of Ming and Qing architectural complexes. It has been named as Zhejiang Province's Historical and Cultural Famous Town and Zhejiang Province's Tourism Town.
Located 14 kilometers southwest of Ninghai County, Ningbo City, it is one of the best-preserved towns in the eastern Zhejiang region that embodies Confucian culture. In 2007, it was awarded the title of China's Historical and Cultural Famous Town. The local Tong family has been diligent in farming and learning since settling here during the Shao Ding period of the Southern Song Dynasty. At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, Tong Bolai twice invited Fang Xiaoru to lecture at the Shijing Jingshe, laying the foundation for a family of poetry and etiquette. Since then, following the virtues of optimizing the environment by diverting water and planting trees, cultivating and reading, and educating future generations, generations of talents have emerged, forming an ancient cultural style of 'small bridges and flowing water in every household, and ancient alleys and courtyards hiding art and literature.' This place is also the hometown of Tong Baoxuan, the commander-in-chief of the Zhejiang province during the Xinhai Revolution, and the base of the Taishu Revolution. Attractions available for touring include well-preserved ancient houses, old streets, folk museums, Lushan Mountain, Shijing Mountain, Filial Daughter Lake, Chai Wanying Cypress, and Xu Xiake's ancient travel path.

Qiantong Ancient Town | One of the few non-commercialized, secluded ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River
One of the few non-commercialized, secluded ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River. ♦️ Qiantong Ancient Town was established at the end of the Song Dynasty and reached its peak during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, still preserving over 1300 various ancient residential buildings. I first learned about Qiantong Ancient Town because it was the filming location for director Chen Yifei's movie 'The Barber'.
The layout of this ancient town is based on the Bagua pattern, with flowing water in front of every household and carved beams in every home.
👉 About Transportation
🚄 Take the high-speed train to Ningbo Ninghai Station, then take a taxi (about 40 yuan) or a bus for 4 yuan (about half an hour's journey).
🚘 Drive directly to Qiantong Ancient Town.
👉 My Route
Zhisi Residence ➡️ Mingjing Hall ➡️ Zesi Residence ➡️ Shangtang House ➡️ Qunfeng Zanzhu ➡️ Tong's Ancestral Hall ➡️ Folk Museum
🎫 'Ticket': 60 yuan (the ancient town is not enclosed, many alleys can be entered to tour the town, only the Folk Museum requires a ticket for entry)
🤔 'Personal Experience'
♦️ Qiantong is not like Wuzhen or Xitang, which are spread out along the river. Here, every household has a water channel in front of the door, with flowing water and carved beams.
♦️ Accustomed to the hustle and bustle of ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River, this place does not have a strong commercial atmosphere, with more local residents, and everywhere is full of life. If you like originality and tranquility, this place is definitely worth a visit!
♦️ Walking on the ancient town's bluestone-paved streets, observing the architecture different from other ancient towns, and experiencing the unique slow life of the ancient town, one person, one tea, one afternoon!
🏨 'About Accommodation'
✅ I stayed at 'Ninghai Xiakexuan Hotel', located at the foot of Lianghuang Mountain, built against the mountain, with traditional Chinese courtyard design, white walls and black tiles, changing scenery with every step, less than fifty meters away from Lianghuang Mountain Scenic Area, and there is also an ancient temple to check in. It's only a ten-minute drive from Qiantong Ancient Town, very convenient.
✅ The hotel's tea room is very aesthetically pleasing, the design of the public areas is also very distinctive, and there is a large lawn in the backyard for camping and pitching tents. For families with children, there is also a cute children's playground with slides and rock climbing.
The rooms are also spacious, all designed with terraces. This time, the reverse travel price was affordable, very satisfying!
🥙 About Food
✅ Famous Qiantong three treasures, 30r per serving
✅ Qiantong pancake: Locals line up here to buy, very famous, very fragrant and delicious! Location: Outside the ancient town's ticket checkpoint, opposite to Gu Ming
‼️tips:
✅ It is recommended to drive: Set the navigation to Qiantong Ancient Town, do not navigate to the parking lot, as it is nearly 1km walk from the ancient town. There are many grid parking spaces available on the roadside❗️
✅ If the itinerary is not very tight, it is recommended to climb to Lushan at the entrance of the village to overlook the entire town.
✅ Nearby attractions include Liangwang Mountain Scenic Area, the starting point of Xu Xiake's travel notes.

There really is a place that is so deserted on May Day
There really is a deserted place on May Day
Ninghai Qiantong Ancient Town is so quiet that it doesn’t look like it’s the May Day holiday. The water gurgling under the bluestone slabs, the flowers in front of the windowsill, the vendors on the roadside, the dustpan and bucket leaning in front of the door, and the shadow puppet show in the shed, everything has slowed down.
Why is it so deserted? The answer is very simple. In this era when every city has its own so-called "ancient town" and "ancient street", even free ancient towns are often criticized for "homogenization" and "commercialization". It is actually How can I be confident if I dare to charge 50 yuan for admission? I came here with the intention of complaining, but if I put this aside, this can be regarded as a 7-point May Day reverse tourist destination. It is really clean, the buildings are well preserved, there are locals living around it, there are no homogeneous shops and chain stores, all they sell are local snacks, and the prices in the scenic area are also very cheap, 6 yuan a piece The soup dumplings in the cage and the salt-baked potatoes cost 10 yuan per kilogram. People cannot believe that these prices exist in Zhejiang.
In short, if you just want to avoid the crowds, enjoy a half-day leisurely vacation with family and friends and don't care about the 50 yuan, you can still come for a walk.
PS: There is a master who performs intangible cultural heritage magic. My friend and I thought about it for a long time and still didn’t understand how he turned one ball into three balls in our hands.

📸Photo Spots Introduction

2⃣️Longgong Ancient Village,
With a history of over 900 years, the village has preserved many ancient houses and stone roads, as well as a uniquely shaped dragon tree, those who like to visit ancient villages will be pleasantly surprised.
3⃣️Xiyousi Temple,
A temple hidden in the mountains, with a history of over 800 years, the Buddha pagoda and statues built against the mountain are particularly impressive! It is currently under construction, but you can still visit normally.
4⃣️Qiantong Ancient Town,
Known as the 'Little Lijiang of Jiangnan', the ancient town uses the principle of Bagua to introduce stream water into the village, forming a residential structure of 'carved beams in every house, living water in every household', it is one of the few ancient towns in Zhejiang that is not overly commercialized.
🏨Accommodation Recommendation
We stayed at the Ninghai Sheraton Hotel this time, only a 6min drive from Ninghai High-Speed Train Station, very convenient for traveling and sightseeing~~ The room window overlooks the charming lake view and hotel surroundings.

Qiantong Ancient Town Journey: Dreams Turn into Reality
Qiantong Ancient Town Journey: Dreams Turn into Reality
Once upon a time, my heart was filled with countless aspirations and dreams. Before I went to college, I often fantasized about living in the south for a while, to experience that unique tranquility and poetic charm. Imagining myself strolling on the ancient town's bluestone paths, feeling the distinctive flavor of the water town.
Now, as I find myself in the embrace of Qiantong Ancient Town, those dreams seem to have come true one by one. Every corner of the ancient town is permeated with a rich historical atmosphere, and each brick and tile tells a story of the years. I walk along the river, watching the water flow gently, as if I can hear the breathing of the ancient town.
Here, I have felt the gentleness and tranquility of the southern water town. The residential houses in the ancient town are well-arranged, with white walls and black tiles, exuding an antique charm. I have tasted the local specialties and felt the warmth and simplicity of the southern people.
Looking back, those quirky ideas have now become reality. I am grateful to Qiantong Ancient Town for making my dreams come true and for making me cherish the beautiful moments I have now.

🏨 'Accommodation Strategy'
I stayed at the Ninghai Sheraton Hotel this time, not far from Ninghai High-speed Railway Station and the highway exit, and also not far from the various attractions we were going to. I think the environment is good. The entrance is an oriental-style waterscape and garden, reflecting the philosophical musings on 'mountains' at the beginning of 'Xu Xiake's Travel Notes', which coincides with the feeling this city gives me. Next to it is Tianming Lake Park, and you can also visit the park in the morning, quite comfortable.
.
🍜 'Food Strategy'
The seafood here is delicious, although there are not many types of seafood now, but there are also many choices, green crabs, grouper, various miscellaneous fish are all delicious. I recommend Caiyue Xuan Chinese Restaurant, their crab rice cake is so good. There are also Qiantong pancakes and various bean products which are local specialties.
.
If you feel tired from work, why not come to this comfortable seaside town for a visit!

Every family has a flowing stream, and every household has carved beams
was founded at the end of the Song Dynasty and reached its peak during the Ming and Qing dynasties, still preserving more than 1,300 various ancient residential buildings to this day. The local Tong family began to settle here during the Shaoding period of the Southern Song Dynasty. In the early Ming Dynasty, Tong Bolai invited Fang Xiaoru to lecture here twice, forming the cultural style of the ancient village with 'little bridges and flowing water in every courtyard, and ancient alleys and courtyards hiding art and literature.'
The cultural atmosphere of this place is very unique, without deliberate ostentation or imitation, only the strong ancient charm and vivid rural scenery. Here, you can hear the rhythm of the beautiful Jiangnan silk and bamboo music. 'Every family has carved beams, and every household has flowing water,' this is the biggest feature that distinguishes Qiantong from other ancient towns! It is said that in ancient times, the natural conditions of Tong Town were harsh, and the harvest depended entirely on the weather. The ancestors of the Tong surname spared no effort and introduced water into the village according to the principles of the Bagua, creating the unique 'Bagua Water System' in the ancient architectural clusters of Jiangnan, creating a wonderful scenery that is not a water town but is better than a water town!
Walking on the quiet bluestone paths of the ancient town, one is reminded of a distant Jiangnan dream. On both sides of the old street paved with flagstones and cobblestones, there are shops with long plank facades, and nearby there are groups of ancient buildings with exquisite craftsmanship that are still perfectly preserved to this day. Walking among them seems to take people's thoughts back to the distant past~

Qiantong ancient town is unexpectedly nice to stroll around
📮 Ninghai's Qiantong ancient town is bigger and nicer to walk around than I imagined. This ancient town has a real sense of life, and you can savor it slowly~
📮 In front of every household in this ancient town, there is a scene of small bridges over flowing water, with stone steps and ancient paths, which are very tasteful~
You need to buy a ticket🎫 to enter, 50 yuan (depending on platform discounts), and parking🅿️ is free~
📯 Main attractions to check in: Mingjing Hall, Zhisiqi Residence, Tong's Ancestral Hall, old movie theater, and this is also the filming location of 'The Barber'🎬 Qiantong Post Office is also a popular photo spot for many people~
📯 Three treasures for foodies:
Stinky tofu, hollow tofu, and dried tofu~
📯 The saying 'the river water does not reach the well water' is also a feature here~

Qiantong Ancient Town | The Little Lijiang of the South
Qiantong Ancient Town may not be as famous as Wuzhen or Xitang, but it is very well-preserved and is known as the Little Lijiang of the South. The scenic area is not very commercialized, and the few restaurants there are similarly priced and not expensive. The 'Three Treasures of Qiantong' refer to three ways of eating tofu (stinky tofu, hollow tofu, and dried tofu), which are the local specialty foods.
☑️ Located in Ninghai County, it takes half an hour to 40 minutes to get there by taxi from the main urban area. Qiantong Ancient Town has a complete set of Ming and Qing architectural complexes and is the largest settlement of the Tong surname in the south of the Yangtze River. It is a town with the ancient charm of Confucian culture. In 2007, it was awarded the title of China's Historical and Cultural Famous Town.
☑️ tips: The ticket is 50 yuan per person, and after 5 pm, you can enter without a ticket 🎫. However, many shops close in the evening, which might make it a bit quiet. But the night view with the lights is still nice. Do not wander into the alleys, as it is easy to get lost.
☑️ Here, 'every family has carved beams, and every household has running water'.
It's like an ancient rural painting with a strong charm, a beautiful and moving piece of Jiangnan silk music. Ancient relics such as Xiaonv Lake, Miao Lake, Zhisi Hall, Scholar's Bridge, and Nangong Temple still exist today. The Tong family ancestral hall designed by Fang Xiaoru at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty is still largely intact. At night, you can hear the elderly singing and playing the piano 🎹, a lively talent show that brings the ancient town to life.
☑️ The old street of the ancient town is flanked by shops with long plank doors. Adjacent to the old street is a group of ancient buildings that are still intact to this day, with exquisitely carved beams, doors, and windows. The leaping fish and horse head walls, as well as the ridge-sculpted wall flowers, have a unique local style. The horse head wall is a symbol of the power of the ancient wealthy families and officials in the south of the Yangtze River; it is said that the more tiers, the higher the position. There are also many homestays here, where you can stay for a day to experience the local customs.

Family, who knows! Zhejiang's Da Ninghai is just too beautiful!
After a recent trip back to my hometown in Sanmen, I found out that taking a taxi from Sanmen to Qiantong in Ninghai is only a few dozen yuan, so I took the opportunity to have a two-day tour of Ninghai.🚗
This trip was really worth it, I discovered so many hidden gems.🎉🎉🎉
The first stop was the coffee shop by the seaside in Qiangjiao Town, called Folk Uncle, right by the sea, with a super beautiful view!😎😎😎
The second stop was Guangde Temple, which is a temple with a bit of Tang Dynasty style, not the bright yellow exterior walls, but white wooden structures, very large, but the main entrance is currently not accessible, remember to go through the east gate!🙏🙏🙏
The third stop was Qiantong Ancient Town, the filming location for the movie 'The Barber', where you can capture the whole panorama without a drone, just by going up the hill opposite.🎥🎥🎥
The fourth stop was the seaside highway in Qiangjiao Town, which is the 'Little Jeju Island' mentioned online, where you can see the seascape along the road.🛣️🛣️🛣️
The fifth stop was the Sheraton Ninghai, where the outdoor seating for afternoon tea has a backdrop of several tall buildings, really stylish!😜😜😜
The sixth stop was the Jiajue Science Wharf, a great place to watch the sunset, with a Sunset Tea Break Cafe by the sea.🌅🌅🌅
The seventh stop was Ninghai Forest Hot Spring - Guo Jin Zen Temple, where you can go for hot springs in winter and for summer retreat, with very lush vegetation.🌳🌳🌳
The eighth stop was the Again Coffee Shop by the seaside in Qiangjiao Town, which is currently being renovated and looks like it will be ready soon.🤩🤩🤩
The ninth stop was the Haiyu English Afternoon Tea by the seaside in Qiangjiao Town.🍰🍰🍰
The tenth stop was the Ninghai Bay Hengshan Island Scenic Area, where you can get to Hengshan Island by boat from the Fisherman's Wharf, and here you can see the beautiful sea blue.🐳🐳🐳
When in Ninghai, of course, you can't forget to eat delicious food!😋😋😋
You must try the grass paste and Magnolia freeze, the mint flavor inside is the memory of my childhood summers.🍹🍹🍹
If you go out to sea from Hengshan Island, don't forget to eat the small seafood!🦀🦀🦀
This trip really made me take a fresh look at Ninghai, its beautiful scenery and delicious food made me linger and forget to return.🤗🤗🤗
If you also want to go on a trip on a whim, consider Ninghai!💗💗💗

Recently, Qiantong Ancient Town in Ninghai has been recognized as a provincial-level cultural and tourism integration IP. What are its charms?
It is located at the junction of Yongtai, preserving a large amount of folklore and intangible cultural heritage at all levels. Black-green tiles, pink-white walls, the Bai Creek water flows into the village along the canal, every household is connected by a small bridge over the flowing water, and every household has a cobblestone path. The ancient town houses, academies, and ancestral halls each have their own style; old streets, pavilions, and archways reflect each other, and cobblestone roads, ancient courtyards, ancient wells, stone flower windows, and Bagua water systems can all be captured in the lens.
The Qiantong Ancient Town IP is unique, combining the unique Bagua water system of Qiantong with the flying eaves and corners of ancient buildings, as well as cobblestones, stone flower windows, and lanterns.
In the ancient town, you can experience intangible cultural heritage crafts such as embroidery, bamboo weaving, bamboo carving, plant tie-dyeing, and gold-colored lacquer.
When you come to Qiantong Ancient Town, you must try the three treasures of Qiantong: white tofu is tender and fragrant; hollow tofu is crispy and crunchy; dried tofu is salty and resilient... These three delicacies are collectively referred to as the three treasures of Qiantong with their unique taste and rich historical value.
Xiake cake has many colors, thin and thick, with different flavors; Qiantong soup dumplings are fresh and tender, can be steamed or boiled; the champion cake implies auspiciousness, it is said that this is also a kind of food that can greatly help Wenchang luck.
Living in Qiantong, you will feel that the green bricks and grey tiles, small bridges and flowing water, and carved beams and painted buildings are particularly warm and intimate. Lushan Bieyuan, Qiantong Post, Shangmutang, Xiangxu·Qiantong, Dachemen Homestay are all good choices
