Huaminglou Town is under the jurisdiction of Ningxiang City, Changsha City, and is located about 45 kilometers southwest of Changsha City. On this day, the fog was heavy, and the highway was closed, so we had to take the provincial road from Changsha to Huaminglou. The reason why we went to Huaminglou is that it is the hometown of former President Liu Shaoqi, which is now developed into the Liu Shaoqi Hometown Scenic Area, including the former residence, memorial hall, bronze statue square, cultural relics museum, Huaminglou, Xiuyang Pavilion, etc., with a total area of more than 1,200 mu. We arrived there before noon, the fog had dissipated, and it became cloudy, which was very suitable for outdoor sightseeing. The cultural square in front of Liu Shaoqi's hometown covers an area of more than 5,000 square meters, surrounded by nine 4-meter-high and 0.6-meter-diameter coiled dragon stone pillars. The gate of Liu Shaoqi's hometown is a paifang-style gate, which was completed in 1998. Unfortunately, Liu Shaoqi's hometown was closed to visitors because the bamboo and broken tree trunks crushed by ice and snow in the scenic area blocked the road and had not been cleaned up in time. Standing at the gate and looking inside, you can indeed see the messy scene. After leaving Huaminglou and driving 30 kilometers southwest, you will reach the hometown of another great man - Shaoshan Mao Zedong's Former Residence Scenic Area in Xiangtan City, which is currently part of the Shaoshan Scenic Area. Shaoshan Chong is a small village in Xiangtan County, Changsha City, Hunan Province, but it is famous for being the birthplace of Chairman Mao Zedong. Chairman Mao was born here, and people who love and admire him call this place "the place where the red sun rises," comparing Chairman Mao to the sun. Although this phrase originated in the fervent era of the last century, it truly expresses the place Chairman Mao holds in people's hearts. Chairman Mao has been gone for nearly half a century, yet the admiration for him, especially among those who lived through the last century, has not faded with time. On the eve of the Year of the Dragon (February 9, 2024), we made a special trip to Shaoshan to celebrate the New Year, undeterred by the icy and snowy obstacles set by the weather. The local government and people worked day and night to clear the snow and remove the branches and leaves broken by the ice and snow, preparing to welcome visitors from all directions. As night fell, the temperature gradually dropped to freezing, but people's enthusiasm for paying tribute to Chairman Mao continued to rise. People spontaneously gathered at Mao Zedong Square, converging towards the statue of Chairman Mao. The golden statue of Chairman Mao on the high platform gleamed under the lights, surrounded by baskets of flowers, and guarded by armed police officers. As the New Year approached, firecrackers and fireworks filled the air, and people carried flower baskets and queued up to present flowers in front of the statue of Chairman Mao, reaching a climax of excitement. That night, at least 20,000 people gathered at Mao Zedong Square to welcome the New Year. In Shaoshan, we stayed at Mao's Restaurant. The restaurant's chairman, Mrs. Mao, is 95 years old and is two generations older than Chairman Mao. When Chairman Mao returned to his hometown in 1959, he only entered her house. In the photo we took with her, she is the one holding a child. According to her, Chairman Mao had the people of the entire country in his heart and did not give any special favors to his hometown folks. This is why the people of Shaoshan feel that Chairman Mao is truly great.

it was a pleasant embankment being here as the grass would move side to side in the summer breeze. I liked the way the green of the grass contrasted against the mountain and lake colours.

I mostly prefer natural beauty but at some point anything can be "too much" 🤭 So while my friend opted for Sichuan I decided to go to Changsha to avoid high risk areas - covid map was my main guide this summer 🙄 When I started learning about Changsha main tourist attractions, I found out that most of them relate to communist party, so I just grabbed the chance, as for me that was something new and special (in China) . From logistics and cost point of view I decided to join a Chinese tour (hoping my Chinese improved since last year🤞.. Not so much😔 but anyway it's possible with any Chinese level, depending on your other skills, experience and target) As for my tour most of the time we spent in the house and museum of Liu Shaoqi (impressive) as it was similar to Mao Zedong's but less crowded. Afternoon we went to Mao Zedong's house and then to memorial park. The trip was exactly what I needed: good timing and logistics, all information in the museums was provided both in Chinese and English and I learnt a lot on the internet on the way, too. In the evening I also went to an open air performance which was good. I stayed overnight and had a nice hike over rural area in the morning. Another 2 great days in Hunan!
