Bangkok's Hidden Gem in the Old Town - Wat Ratchanatdaram: A Spiritual Journey in the Golden Castle
In Bangkok's old town, there is an astonishing yet understated treasure - Wat Ratchanatdaram (Loha Prasat). This temple was built by King Rama III in 1846 for his granddaughter, Princess Somanass Waddhanawathy. Inspired by the ancient capital of Sri Lanka, it is one of the three major metal temples in the world. The unique 37 golden spires make the entire temple shine brilliantly, earning it the nickname 'Metal Castle.'
These golden spires are not designed arbitrarily but symbolize the 37 virtues of Buddhism. The layered structure contains profound Buddhist meanings. The top spire of the temple enshrines a relic of the Buddha, adding to its solemn and sacred atmosphere. As you climb the wooden spiral staircase, passing through intricately carved Buddha statues and pillars, you not only appreciate the exquisite craftsmanship but also feel a sense of tranquility as you ascend.
When you reach the observation deck at the top of the temple, you get a panoramic view of Bangkok's old town. Especially at dusk, when the sunlight falls on the golden spires, the entire structure seems to be bathed in a golden glow, offering a breathtaking visual and inner peace. This location was also featured in the Korean drama 'Welcome to the Kingdom,' adding a touch of charm with the presence of Korean actress Yoona.
Wat Ratchanatdaram is easily accessible. It's about a 7-minute walk from the Phanfa Leelard Pier of the Khlong Saen Saep Express Boat, or a 15-minute walk from the Sam Yot MRT station. This attraction is free of charge, offering great value and a serene place to linger. Given Bangkok's congested traffic, taking the express boat is highly recommended. It not only allows you to immerse yourself in the local lifestyle but also offers an affordable way to experience different modes of transportation without any traffic jams!
If you have the chance to stroll through Bangkok's old town, don't miss this golden spiritual fortress. It's recommended to visit it along with the nearby Golden Mount Temple to make your old town trip more complete.

Wat Ratchanatdaram Worawihan,
Inside the temple is a metal castle, which is the only metal castle in Thailand and the only one in the world. It was built in 2389 B.E., which was the end of the reign of King Nangklao. His Majesty ordered the construction of a metal castle instead of a pagoda. It is considered the first metal castle in Thailand. It is a 7-storey building with 37 castle spires, which represent the 37 factors of enlightenment in Buddhism. The 7th castle spire is where the Buddha's relics are enshrined. In the middle of the castle is a hollow space with a 67-step spiral staircase that allows you to walk up to see the view from above. Most of the architecture in Wat Ratchanatdaram is still in the Thai style. The ordination hall has a gable, raka leaves, and a pediment covered with gold lacquer and decorated with beautiful glass. Inside is the principal Buddha image named "Phra Setthammuni". The viharn is also in the Thai style. Inside is the main Buddha image in the attitude of calming the ocean, named "Phra Phutthachutithamnarasop".

Ancient Temple Shadows: Strolling Through Wat Ratchanatdaram in Bangkok
At Wat Ratchanatdaram in Bangkok, the imposing silhouette of Loha Prasat stands tall against the blue sky, inspiring awe. This rare metal pagoda in the world, with its layered symmetrical beauty, outlines a blend of classical and mysterious. The contrast between the white walls and black iron spires is even more dazzling under the sunlight, like a feast of history and art.
Entering the temple, the atmosphere instantly quiets down, with only the gentle breeze wafting the scent of incense. Following the stairs up to the top of the tower, overlooking Bangkok's skyline, one feels a sense of serenity and vastness. The interior of the Buddha hall is simply furnished, yet exudes a strong sense of Zen, as if reminding people that true peace often comes from deep within.
As the sun sets, the metal spires are bathed in a warm golden light, contrasting with the bustling urban scene of Bangkok, bringing an unexpected tranquility and beauty. On this ancient land, the elegance of Wat Ratchanatdaram is like a softly spoken story, deeply etched in the heart.

Bangkok Market Tour | Nang Loeng Market in the Morning: Experience Local Life in the Old Town
Nang Loeng Market is a 120-year-old market that I stumbled upon while walking around Bangkok. It is a treasure trove of a destination, made up of several small alleys that converge into a large open space. Located in the old town of Bangkok, the market is home to many Chinese residents, and many of the stalls have been passed down from generation to generation, offering traditional flavors that can't be found elsewhere!
Today, Nang Loeng Market is no longer focused on selling fresh produce, but is more like a food center, similar to the food courts and hawker centers in Malaysia and Singapore. There is a wide variety of Thai and Chinese food, main courses, desserts, and drinks, all at affordable prices. It's a great place to explore, and you can have breakfast and lunch here. I personally recommend coming here in the morning when the food is freshest, so you can start your day with a full stomach.
🍕Recommended Snacks
Nanta Thai Desserts: Thai steamed desserts with different flavors such as pumpkin, coconut, and banana. I think they're pretty good.
Ya Chaem's Kanom Bueang Yuan: Vietnamese desserts made with a charcoal stove, one is a bit like an omelet, and the other is bread stuffed with meat and fried.
Neua Tun Nang Loeng: A beef stew shop run by an old Chinese man, which can be paired with noodles and other main courses.
🪭Nearby Attractions: There are many attractions nearby, including three famous temples: Wat Saket, Wat Ratchanatdaram, and Wat Benchamabophit, each with its own unique features. Wat Saket is located on a hill, offering a panoramic view of Bangkok's skyline; Wat Ratchanatdaram has a magnificent golden pagoda; and Wat Benchamabophit is a modern Thai temple with a blend of European styles.
These three temples are secondary attractions in Bangkok, not as famous as the Grand Palace or Wat Pho, so there are not many visitors, making for a quieter and more enjoyable experience. The distance from the market to these three places is about the same, so if you're interested or have enough time, you can visit all three, or just pick one to visit.
📍Address: Nang Loeng Market
⏱️Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday, 8:30 am–3 pm (try to go in the morning) Address: Nakhon Sawan 6 Alley, Wat Sommanat, PomPrap Sattru Phai, Bangkok 10100.

Iron Temple Stunning Views
#bangkoktrip
Wat Ratchanaddaram is considered one of the most unusual architectural monuments in Bangkok. The temple complex consists of several buildings, the most notable of which is Loha Prasat, which literally means "Metal Castle" in Thai.
Of Thailand's more than 30,000 temples built to similar designs, Loha Prasat is the only religious structure in the kingdom topped by a series of pointed iron spires. There are 37 of them in total, according to the number of virtues that every Buddhist should practice on the path to enlightenment.
Ratchanadda Temple was transformed after the reconstruction, which was completed in 2019. The black spires cast from iron turned golden. The building, which previously looked like a fairy-tale palace, has lost its identity, becoming similar to thousands of similar religious buildings with a predominance of white and gold colors in the decoration.
The architecture of the Iron Castle traces the traditions of the temple architecture of Ceylon and India, the characteristic design feature of which is a square base and a multi-storey plan. The building consists of four floors, the rooms are connected by labyrinths. The perimeter of each subsequent level is smaller than the previous one, so visually the structure looks like a stepped pyramid.
The height of the temple-palace is 36 m. The towers have a pyramidal shape, which can be reached by spiral stairs and passages. This type of tower structures symbolizes Meru, the sacred mountain in the cosmogonic representations of Buddhism and Hinduism, which is the axis of the world and the center of all material and spiritual universes.
Gable roofs are built above the arched entrances on the first tier. There are sculptures of Buddhas in the galleries, many of them covered with sheets of finely rolled gold.
The interior of the sanctuary looks ascetic. The upper part of the walls and ceiling in the prayer hall are painted with frescoes, the shutters are decorated with openwork ornaments.
Wat Ratchanadda is located in the historical center of Bangkok on Rattanakosin Island, a kilometer from the Khao San tourist street. Mahakan Fort is located across the street, the temple of the Golden Mountain is located diagonally a little further away, the Rattanakosin Exhibition Hall and the Democracy Monument are within walking distance.

🌸Wat Ratchanatdaram Worawihan is located on Mahachai Road, Phra Nakhon District, Bangkok, near Mahakan Fort, next to Phlap Phla Maha Jessada Bodin, at the foot of Phan Fa Lilat Bridge, near Wat Thepthidaram.
💦Atmosphere: This temple is very beautiful. Chao Phraya Yommarat (Bunnak) was the architect who designed the temple plan. The highlight is the 7-tiered metal castle that stands out prominently. It was built instead of a pagoda. On the 7th floor, there is also the enshrined relics of the Lord Buddha.
There are many temples in Thailand, each of which is majestic and beautifully designed. Bangkok has a temple architectural style that is particularly prominent. Loha Prasat is also called Wang Sun Temple, but it is not often mentioned here, so there is no tourist at all here. Sometimes the whole temple is empty. The
Wang Sun Temple is also known as the "Metal Castle" and is located at the foot of the Cha-Dadaran Monastery, which was ordered by Rama III. Its design is influenced by two other temples in India and Sri Lanka. Wang Sun Temple is 36 meters high and supports 37 metal towers, representing the 37 virtues leading to Enlightenment. The remains of the Buddha are preserved on the highest level of the temple. The name of the
Wang Sun Temple originated during the prevalence of Indian Buddhism and represented a compound multi-level flat building with metal spires, which used to be a place for monks to stay. Throughout the ages, there are only three buildings built in this structure in the world, and now only Bangkok is still standing.
