Chiang Mai, Thailand🇹🇭 Itinerary: • Woke up to sleeper train & put bags in hostel • Went for breakfast at Sunday Bakery • Visited Wat Chedi Luang Temple • Shopped around Chiang Mai • Had lunch at Gravity Cafe • Went to visit the silver temple • Had a beer • Went to Chiang Mai Saturday Night Market We woke up at 5am, on the turbulent sleeper train, to the sunrise in Chiang Mai. It was an experience that I am so grateful for. We headed to the hostel and woowww, this hostel is so serene and beautiful - it truly lives up to its name:( @hiddengardenhostel ). Our favourite adventures so far are the temples. Wat Chedi Luang was an incredible sight, originally beginning construction in the 14th century, the temple resembles ancient ruins. We were shocked at how many good shops there were around Chiang Mai- lots being very modern, selling beautiful handmade items. We visited the completely silver covered temple & then sat and had a Chang Classic beer, as we people watched at a local bar. Bangkok🇹🇭 Itinerary: • Wat Pho (The Temple of the Reclining Buddha) - 200bht entry • Ferry over the river to Wat Arun Temple - 5bht ferry & 100bht temple entry • Ferry to Icon Siam shopping centre - 16bht ferry • Picked up an AIS sim & some spring rolls at Icon Siam • Bolt ride back to the hotel - 40bht each • Go fetch some bubble tea & relax in the pool This morning we woke up at 4am because of the time difference! We waited until 7am breakfast & filled up on the hotel’s free scrambled eggs, toast, pancakes, cereal & fruit. Then we headed to Wat Pho. What an incredible place. The reclining Buddha statue is a sight that no one should miss. Then we walked and walked in attempt to find the Ta Thien Pier, in order to get the ferry across the river to Wat Arun. When we finally found it, it cost 5bht each (12p!) and headed to Wat Arun. Wat Arun is beautiful. A brilliant photo opportunity, but perhaps too touristy. You couldn’t walk around and take in the scenery much, due to people taking photos. Still a brilliant place to visit though! Then we took the busy ferry to Icon Siam. This place is massive. It has so many floors, full of every shop you can imagine. We managed to get our SIM cards sorted in AIS super easy and then went to the food court for some lunch. We took a taxi back, got a bubble tea, and swam in the pool for a little bit, before heading back to the room for a nap. 📍The Ha Giang Loop, Vietnam The Ha Giang loop is a route around the North of Vietnam, on the border of China - best explored on the back of a motorbike! 📍Koh Samui We arrived in Koh Samui on a ferry from Surat Thani. As we approached the pier, the ferry was flooded with heavy rain- so our first day & a half in Koh Samui were pretty cloudy & rainy. We tried to enjoy it nevertheless! On our last day, the sun was shining & we headed to the Wat Plai Laem temples this morning - probably the craziest ones we’ve seen! 📍Hanoi, Vietnam Our last stop in Vietnam - Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital city. This city is crazy. With over 5 million motorbikes on the streets, there isn’t much rest or tranquility to be had in Hanoi. But it is so exciting. Everywhere you look there is something happening. The streets are like a maze with centuries-old architecture and rich culture. There are endless coffee shops offering the most beautiful coffee (in my opinion, the best you’ll ever find) and amazing restaurants and stalls. We spent 4 nights in Hanoi, after our Ha Giang Loop trip, and mainly spent our days wondering the streets and doing an egg coffee making class. But there are an incredible amount of things to do and see in Hanoi. Vietnam as a whole has been such an enlightening trip. Although Thailand did feel like a culture shock, Vietnam was a huge step up. Everything here seems so different to western society; the way of life, customs and etiquette, food, drink and especially the driving😂 Although it takes some getting used to, and sometimes can be frustrating, I am so lucky to have been able to immerse myself into such an interesting culture. A Travel Guide to Hanoi, Vietnam 🇻🇳 Things to do: * Egg Coffee making class: We booked Hoang’s Egg Coffee Making Class through Tripadvisor/Viator - it was £9, including the class, the egg coffee that you make and they make you spring rolls to eat alongside your coffee! * Thrift stores in Hanoi: The Twenty Seven Klub, Super Nasty Vintage, Chan Con Cong, Cua Hang Bach Hoa Hanh. * Vietnamese women’s museum & other Museums. * Visit cute shops around Hanoi for souvenirs, I specifically liked the ‘Collective Memory Shop’. * Day trips to Sapa/Ha Long Bay/Ninh Binh. * Walk around Hoan Kiem Lake. Coffee: * Hanoi Coffee Station: My favourite branch in Vietnam (they also have coffee shops in Hoi An & Phong Na called Phin Coffee) - their coffee is my absolute favourite, especially their peanut butter coffee and coconut coffee. * Cafe Giang: they offer a huge variety of egg coffee concoctions - I had iced Oreo with egg coffee and it was an amazing dessert! They also do beer egg coffee. * Loading T: cinnamon egg coffee! * The running bean. Food: * Pizza Belga (expensive but the pizzas look amazing) * Banh mi 25 (famous Banh Mi place with some unique flavours) * Little Hanoi vegetarian * La Studio - really good smoothie bowls! * Chay Food - really clean & modern vegetarian restaurant. * Lifted coffee and brunch - good for breakfast & coffee, they also do donuts! * Hanoi Coffee station - so many breakfast (overnight oats) & coffee options. * Banh Mi LongHoi Where to stay? After looking for agesss; we found The Kingdom Hotel Hanoi on Agoda. It was £9 a night for an economy room with no window & it totally did the job. I thought the room was perfect for the price. 📍Da Nang (+ Ba Na Hills), Vietnam In contrast to Hoi An, Da Nang is full of hundreds of sky scrapers and modern buildings that line the sea front. Particularly, I liked the modern restaurants, cafes and bars that Da Nang had to offer. Although it is nice to live the cultural, local life whilst travelling, it is also nice to be a tourist & go to places that are totally made for tourists, i.e. an Irish Pub that we went to, called ‘The Shamrock’😂. The highlight of Da Nang was our trip to Ba Na Hills / Sun world. Although tickets are expensive on a backpacker’s budget, it was something that I really wanted to do. The cable car up to the hills is the most scenic, breathtaking view I’ve ever seen. There are so many Instagramable places, which me and Ellie like taking pictures of, but not pictures with (we always seem to rock up with no makeup and messy hair😂). Siargao Island is known for its beautiful beaches and crystal clear water. Indeed this place the Sugba Blue Lagoon, Siargao Island is a hidden gem with beautiful view HOW TO GET HERE? You’ll need to go to del Carmen port and rent a boat (P1,600) and environmental fee of P50 per head. The boat ride going to the lagoon is amazing as you’ll be seeing hectares and hectares of mangroves with beautiful mountains. The lagoon itself is very busy with tourists. They have a dive board you can jump, rent paddle boards and paddle around the lagoon. Half day here is enough time to spend. BEST TIME TO VISIT I recommend that you visit here during summer and high tide. Getting There - getting to the Great Lakes is as easy as getting on a bus, quite literally. buses run from the Qining bus station, located next to the train station to the lakes at 40 rmb. The journey to the lakes will take you through breathtaking scenery, snow capped mountains, quaint rural villages and other incredible vistas. Upon arriving at the lakes, you can walk or either get a boat on the lake to enjoy this wonderland. For food, there are several options outside the lake. There is a small village which offers delicious Qinghai food. I have tried to book this hotel and stayed for whole night. This was due to school holidays just started and i booked late. Subsequently, i chose single room with single bed, but amazing in fact, the room area was considered big and not dense and packed. Overall, the room was neat and also the bathroom was well equipped. Towel area and hairdryer area were provided. In addition , this room was suitable for backpackers. 📍Kerchor Elephant Eco Park, Chiang Mai, Thailand We woke up at 6am this morning for our guided tour of the Karin Hill Tribe’s elephant family, hidden away in the mountains of Chiang Mai. First, we made the elephants their medicine balls (healthy whole foods squished into a ball to provide the elephant with lots of nutrients) Then we met the elephants & fed them their favourite foods (sugar cane & bananas 🍌) We walked with the elephants to where they bathed and watched the young elephants play in the mud. We were fed a fully vegetarian lunch (like the elephants) & headed back to the hostel. It was an incredible experience. An amazing way to learn more about these beautiful creatures, where they are kept in a sanctuary, and looked after by loving people. A Travel guide for the Ha Giang Loop, Vietnam!🇻🇳 A few tips/things to make you aware of, to make your Ha Giang Loop trip easier: (this is specifically with Jasmine tours) - You leave your big backpacks in luggage storage at Jasmine Hostel in Ha Giang & take a small backpack with you for the entire trip (the small backpack is put in a plastic bag & strapped to the motorbike, travelling with you). - The home stays that you stay in around the Ha Giang Loop give you towels - so no need to pack a towel to take with you. - The only real expense, if you’re backpacking on a budget, is drinks. You’ll have to pay for any kind of drink; water, coffee, beer, etc. - We went during 30 degree weather, but at some points, it did still feel cold when driving - pack long trousers if you can (leggings are perfect) and also shorts. Definitely a rain coat. Bui Vien walking street is very crowded and busy at night, especially on weekends. Almost all the alleys/streets of Bui Vien Street are connected. For example, in Bui Vien, the alley 104 is famous for motels and a row of beer bureaus whilst alley 40 in Bui Vien Street is a completely different atmosphere. The alley is quiet with a few restaurants and even a garden. On Saturday, Vietnamese restaurants here are crowded with many groups of foreigners from 10 to 20 people in each group. The restaurants’ prices here are not expensive. I’d say it’s reasonable depending on what you order. #spooktaculartrip I accidentally passed by this interesting building on my way back to my hotel after I had my dinner. The living wall is one of the walls of Musée Du Quai Branly Jacques Chirac. It was fascinating to see this nice wall full of plants in the middle of the metropolitan. Very unique and delightful to the eyes! This living wall is just a stone’s throw from the Eiffel tower! Hekou located on the border with Vietnam, adjacent to Lao Cai ( Vietnam ). A train trip to takes 6-7 hours.
