A Temple in the Clouds
⛩️ Breathtaking views of a temple hanging high up on a cliff side
⛰️ Incredible hike that includes multiple ladders with even more views at the peak
🥾 Temple hike is friendly to all ages and abilities, peak hike not so much
🏨 Hotel available at base
📸 Photogenic scenery that’s IG friendly
🌤️ Fun in all weather
Lingtongshan is a must see no matter the weather if you’re in the Xiamen/Zhangzhou area. I’ve done the hike in sun, rain, and heavy fog and each time is a unique, beautiful, and fun experience. Cost of entry is 20 yuan per person.
I’ve taken my 65 year old parents, friends who aren’t in the best shape, dog, and seen countless kids make the hike up the stairs to the temple. The temple portion is about a 30 minute trek and most people of any fitness level can make it. The hike that forks off and goes to the peak is more difficult and requires the ability to squeeze into tight spaces and climb ladders. Be aware if you bring your dog they’ll either need to fit in a bag or you’ll need another way to carry them up the ladders. Hike this portion at your own discretion. The peak hike would take an average group a little over an hour going up and a little less coming back down. Depending on who I hike with I’ve done it as fast as 40 minutes up though.
If you have a Chinese drivers license it’s highly recommended to rent a car and drive out to the mountain. The trip from Xiamen is beautiful in itself and you’ll have the flexibility of going/leaving when you want. Getting a DiDi or taxi is very difficult from the mountain so please be prepared ahead of time.
Welcome to Fujian and safe travels!

Unforgettable nights in Liancheng
Driving to Liancheng on the old state highway was a pleasant surprise. The countryside was absolutely picturesque, with hills, rice fields and charming little villages that made the journey fly by. Once we arrived, Guanzhai Mountain was our first stop. The views were stunning and the hike was both refreshing and peaceful.
But the real magic happened at night in Liancheng Square. We were completely blown away by the molten iron show and the incredible water and light displays. The historic buildings lit up beautifully, creating an enchanting atmosphere that felt straight out of a movie. And the best part? It was all for free! Liancheng is a hidden gem that left us truly amazed.

Yunshuiyao, heritage ancient town in Fujian
#freehotelstay
There are many preserved ancient towns in China (guzhen) which have become very touristy. At first glance, Yunshuiyao appears to be one of them, with loads of tourists and tour guides clambering about for photos. However, if you veer off the main area for a little wander, it's still possible to catch quiet glimpses of this charming water town by the world-renowned circular tulous.
A bit of background on Yunshuiyao:
🌳 The town is defined by the many ancient banyan trees growing by the river- there are 9 of them which are thousands of years old! See if you can spot the couple banyan tree by the main entrance to the village!
🎭 The town has been renamed after a famous Chinese movie that was filmed here over 15 years ago starring Vivian Hsu 🎥
While most of the houses by the river have been converted into gift shops and cafes, there are still residents living in the village, and you can see them carrying on with their day to day life, be it sunning chillies or tending to their gardens. Allow yourself to slow down and stroll, and just soak up the atmosphere, like the dog in the last picture 😉

Meet Xiamen again
Fujian
"Xiamen"
The central city in the Golden Triangle of southern Fujian is one of the first four special economic zones opened in mainland China and is also a famous hometown of overseas Chinese.
Green vegetation covers the entire city, making it an urban jungle, and also a jungle city; sea water flows around it, saying that the city is on the sea, or that the sea is in the city.
From a small fishing port to a modern port, it was the starting point for many people to choose to cross the ocean, and it is also the destination for how many people today decide to leave their hometown.

Chinese countryside life

Primarily built between the 15th and 20th centuries, tulou served as fortified homes, providing safety and fostering community bonds. Hekeng: quiet, non-commercial tulou cluster
After visiting the stunning yet crowded Tianluokeng tulou cluster in Nanjing county, I decided to visit a more quiet, less touristy one. To do so, I headed to Hekeng cluster, which is located few kilometers from Tianluokeng (approximately 30 minutes drive, if no traffic jam... and yes, the road around Tianluokeng can get extremely jammed...)
In Hekeng you can admire the quiet, local lifestyle, far from the tourists. The tulou here are smaller and not commercial, perfect to admire the real tulou life.
Climb up to the view point to enjoy a panoramic sight of the village!
Entrance ticket is 40rmb

Splendid Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster!
Tianluokeng tulou cluster is one of the most famous clusters of Nanjing county, due to it's very famous and unique configuration. The village itself is quite commercial and used to visitors; there are in fact many restaurants, souvenir stalls and guesthouses inside the tulou and the surrounding buildings. The ticket (which includes 3 scenic spots in the area) is valid for 24h and costs 90rmb.
Even if notoriously commercial, I decided to go to have a look. The choice of going during the Chinese New Year week was not very wise, as I found a lot of crowd and traffic jam on the road to the cluster 😰
My suggestion would be to avoid national holidays and just go during low season if possible.
Nevertheless, the place itself is stunning and worth seeing when in China.
Especially at night or in the early morning (when most of the daily visitors are gone or not arrived yet), Tianluokeng is quiet and enchanting, a joy to be there. To do so, you should definitely spend the night in the area, better if in a tulou house!
And don't forget to bring your drone with you 😎🚁

Tulou villages: my favorite countryside 🌾
China has spectacular vernacular architecture all over the country, and the Tulou houses are definitely one of the most unique and interesting architectural typology of all.
Belonging to the Hakka people, Tulou are huge fortified dwelling meant to host several families belonging to the same clan.
A Tulou is split between families into slices, so that each one owns a piece of every floor.
At the bottom there are kitchen and spaces for the livestock, while on upper floors are storage and bedrooms.
It's difficult to capture in picture how amazing these structures are.
You MUST go and see it with your own eyes!

Quanzhou's lively West Street
When in Quanzhou, taking a stroll along the West Street, one of the most popular spots of the city, is a must do for every visitor!
West Street is located in the downtown area of Quanzhou (Fujian Province), at the side of the UNESCO site of the Kanyuan Temple.
The street is renowned for its local snacks and charming historic buildings, characterized by the local architectural style, recognizable by the lively orange color of the bricks and tiles.
I visited West Street during the week of Chinese New Year 2023, and although really crowded, I still enjoyed the local flavor and tasty street food! 😋🍢

Quanzhou for architecture & culture lovers !
Vibrant city to enjoy for at least 2 days for culture, architecture and food.
Few worth it half-day trips around doable by didi.
Active by day and night !
Visit the temple of the Queen of heaven in the morning then hang out around and through its southern streets during market time. Go back after sunset for a busy and messy atmosphere.
Go to Kaiyuan temple in the afternoon and hang out on Xi jie, have tea and watch the sunset from one of the rooftop. Favorite one Baishui Haoxi, a nice-edgy renovated Republic of China building (around 1930).
Get lost in the small streets and you will see small family temples built at every other corner.
Other great temples, Confucian temple, Chengtian temple, Tonghuai temple, to see both by day and pass by by night.
Stay at the Dongmian inn nearby the Chengtian temple, great host and ideal location.
A half-day trip to Xunpucun is easy by didi, this village has old houses with walls built out of oysters shell, unique.
Good destination for seafood and fish. A must try is also the ginger duck, a stewed duck long-cooked in iron pot with tones of ginger.

Zhangzhou Niuzhuang Cultural Park!
I'm currently in Zhangzhou so I decided to explore this city. As usual, there are a lot of parks you can go to anywhere in China. Niuzhuang Cultural Park is different from the other parks. This one doesn't have nature you can see but there are a lot of shops and restaurants around. I think this place is popular for leisure activities. Walking around to see the colorful buildings takes around 15 minutes and after that it's either you want to drink or eat. If you are hungry and at the same time you want to snap some photos I think this place can be your go to.

Fujian Tulou
Tulou or "earthen building" is Hakka people village from 13th/14th century. It's located in Fujian province, around 2 hours drive from Xiamen. UNESCO put it under World Heritage at 2008. There are so many tulous around Fujian but we choose this one which is best for pictures and have amazing view. With tea terraces around place look like from some story.
Tulou houses have few floors, circular or square shape and it was planned to be home for more then 600 people. They are constructed with raw earth, mixed with bamboo, stones and wood.
It was amazing experience, I was feeling some special vibe walking around, so I definitely recommend everyone to visit it.

Jiulong Bonsai Garden, Zhangzhou!
We decided to go to a park in Zhangzhou. It is one of the best parks here. It has a big pond, a lot of big trees probably they are Bonsai trees? I'm not sure about that it's just in my country, bonsai could be a plant or a tree. Many kids were playing and having fun. Adults were playing cards too and Chinese chess. The bridges in the middle of the pond is quite attractive and also the dragons figure at the entrance. We just stayed there approximately 30 minutes. There are small boats too but that time we went we couldn't use them. Well, this park is good to go jogging or just walk around.
