Xiamen : From UNESCO heritage sites to World class Towers
Spent 48 hours discovering the city of Xiamen in October 2024. An inpromptu plan without much planning. To my surprise there are just too many sites that need more time to explore. Went to Gulangyu, which is also a World heritage sites. Other than the hassle of getting tickets which are inflated in my opinion, the sites are just amazing. The historical values are aplenty. The ferry ride was a quick 20 minutes going over, and about 6minutes on the returning trip. Be careful if you are leaving after 5:45pm as the ferry will take you to another dock, and it will be loaded with locals. It is a little over crowded in my opinion. Overall, spent half day in gulangyu was rather relaxing. It will be better to spend a night there if you have the time.
Went to visit a few Toulou. It is just amazing how these traditional houses can accommodate up to 800 and more individuals at times. The engineering behind is unbelievable. Just got to see it to appreciate its mere wonders. Just be extra careful which tours you purchase as some does not come with the entrance fees. I paid extra rmb230 for three different entrance tickets on top of the transportation cost. To do a. One day trip from Xiamen is a little too rush. Spent almost 2:30hours on the road one way. The time can be better spent spending a night near the sites. There are plenty of places of stay. But to travel from Xiamen can be a little too tiring in my opinion. Overall, I am still very satisfied with the visit. Will come back again. Next time, will spend more time staying over night there.

Tulou, the heart of Fuijian
Tulou Fujian. Exceptional traditional building and a very special type of communal living. People living their harmonious relationship with their environment and relatives. Built in 18th century and designed with an inward-looking, circular or square floor design. They were built for defense purposes around a central open courtyard with only one entrance and windows to the outside only above the first floor. Amazing history indeed.

Tulous at Yunshuiyao
I spent an afternoon at Yunshuiyao scene area looking at the tulous. They were all very large and impressive! The path goes along the water and was nice on a sunny day. I also got to see a little puppet show happening. I stored my suitcase at the entrance of the area and then was free to explore for the afternoon. After I was done I got my bags and took the number 6 bus down to Nanjing to get the bus to Xiamen. It’s definitely possible to see the tulous on your own without a tour guide!#tulou
Hekeng: quiet, non-commercial tulou cluster
After visiting the stunning yet crowded Tianluokeng tulou cluster in Nanjing county, I decided to visit a more quiet, less touristy one. To do so, I headed to Hekeng cluster, which is located few kilometers from Tianluokeng (approximately 30 minutes drive, if no traffic jam... and yes, the road around Tianluokeng can get extremely jammed...)
In Hekeng you can admire the quiet, local lifestyle, far from the tourists. The tulou here are smaller and not commercial, perfect to admire the real tulou life.
Climb up to the view point to enjoy a panoramic sight of the village!
Entrance ticket is 40rmb

Splendid Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster!
Tianluokeng tulou cluster is one of the most famous clusters of Nanjing county, due to it's very famous and unique configuration. The village itself is quite commercial and used to visitors; there are in fact many restaurants, souvenir stalls and guesthouses inside the tulou and the surrounding buildings. The ticket (which includes 3 scenic spots in the area) is valid for 24h and costs 90rmb.
Even if notoriously commercial, I decided to go to have a look. The choice of going during the Chinese New Year week was not very wise, as I found a lot of crowd and traffic jam on the road to the cluster 😰
My suggestion would be to avoid national holidays and just go during low season if possible.
Nevertheless, the place itself is stunning and worth seeing when in China.
Especially at night or in the early morning (when most of the daily visitors are gone or not arrived yet), Tianluokeng is quiet and enchanting, a joy to be there. To do so, you should definitely spend the night in the area, better if in a tulou house!
And don't forget to bring your drone with you 😎🚁

Tulou villages: my favorite countryside 🌾
China has spectacular vernacular architecture all over the country, and the Tulou houses are definitely one of the most unique and interesting architectural typology of all.
Belonging to the Hakka people, Tulou are huge fortified dwelling meant to host several families belonging to the same clan.
A Tulou is split between families into slices, so that each one owns a piece of every floor.
At the bottom there are kitchen and spaces for the livestock, while on upper floors are storage and bedrooms.
It's difficult to capture in picture how amazing these structures are.
You MUST go and see it with your own eyes!

Tulou Village - Where Mulan was shoot🎥
Getting There - Train to Xiamen Railway station or Xiamen North Railway Station and car from there to Tulou Complex. I personally recommend to hire a guide as they know better what to show you and where to go (but about it a bit later ☺️)
Attractions - It’s a beautiful authentic village where you can see how people were living long time ago keeping their traditions and enjoying life without technology. All round buildings have little souvenir shops with traditional food, tea and art.
Hotels - I recommend to stay one day in Xiamen as it’s green and peaceful city. we stayed in Palm Beach hotel which is closer to Xiamen Railway station, has clean rooms and friendly service. Later in Tulou find a Flower Hotel, they have five rooms in authentic round building and you’ll have a chance to experience it from inside!
Food & Restaurants - must try is a local wine 🍷 they made from different berry and it’s just delicious! all the food places we have visited was shown us by a guide je new thé places where it will be local and delicious 🤤
Shopping - Souvenirs and picture spots are everywhere around you!

Fujian Tulou
Tulou or "earthen building" is Hakka people village from 13th/14th century. It's located in Fujian province, around 2 hours drive from Xiamen. UNESCO put it under World Heritage at 2008. There are so many tulous around Fujian but we choose this one which is best for pictures and have amazing view. With tea terraces around place look like from some story.
Tulou houses have few floors, circular or square shape and it was planned to be home for more then 600 people. They are constructed with raw earth, mixed with bamboo, stones and wood.
It was amazing experience, I was feeling some special vibe walking around, so I definitely recommend everyone to visit it.
