“Young Sheldon,” CBS
The pint-sized actor broke onto the scene with his first major role in HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” in which he played Shailene Woodley’s son, and now he’s gearing up for his own starring role in one of the buzziest sitcoms of the year: “The Big Bang Theory’s” prequel spinoff “Young Sheldon,” in which Armitage plays the kid version of Jim Parson’s titular character. Not bad for an 8-year-old.
Before landing the role of a lifetime, Armitage wasn’t a “Big Bang Theory” viewer, he admits. “I don’t get a chance to watch a lot of TV,” he says. “When I have free time, I usually go to the theater!” Indeed: Armitage, the child of an actor and a theater producer, first gained attention at the ripe age of six when he started posting Broadway reviews on YouTube, which went viral.
Though he isn’t a longtime fan of “Big Bang,” Armitage is a huge fan of Parsons’ work, both on-screen and behind the scenes. “He has been there every step of the way. He has talked to me a lot about Sheldon and helped me so much,” Armitage says. “It is pretty lucky to get advice from the world’s greatest Sheldon expert.”
Working alongside Woodley, Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman on “Big Little Lies” was the best training ground possible for a young actor, he says. “I learned so much from all of them,” he says. “I learned that you never need to show off or act like you are better than anyone. You can stay focused and work hard, but still have fun because this is all like a giant playground.”
