Variety TV editors Emily Longeretta and Michael Schneider break down the Emmys’ biggest comedy performances — from both lead and supporting categories — in the latest episode of Variety‘s Awards Circuit, presented by Showtime.

From prolific film actor Harrison Ford to veteran comedians Martin Short and Steve Martin, as well as buzzy TV stars like Quinta Brunson and Jenna Ortega, Schneider and Longeretta discuss how this year has a “laundry list” of contenders.

Following the three wins from “Abbott Elementary” at the 75th Emmy awards, Schneider and Longeretta speculate that former winner Sheryl Lee Ralph and former nominees Quinta Brunson, Janelle James, Tyler James Williams, as well as Lisa Ann Walter, could be up for nominations in the four categories.

While “Abbott Elementary” could occupy five nominations, “Barry,” “The Bear” and “Only Murders in the Building,” are predicted to possibly garner three nominations total — with supporting actor likely going to both “Barry’s” Anthony Carrigan and previous winner Henry Winkler, as well as lead to Bill Hader.

Hader could receive his fourth nomination, and be in contention with Martin and Short. But as Longeretta notes, the two “could cancel each other out” within that category, while Selena Gomez may receive her first nomination as lead actress for the series. However, Schneider hopes that “Barry” star Sarah Goldberg could finally receive a nomination for her supporting role.

Following Jeremy Allen White’s wins at both the Golden Globes and SAG Awards for his leading work on “The Bear,” Schneider and Longeretta believe he has a good chance to score a nomination, as well as his costars Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Ayo Edebiri for supporting actor and actress.

With “Only Murders” and “Barry” possibly taking home three nominations each, Schneider and Longeretta anticipate that “Shrinking,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Masiel,” and “Ted Lasso” will all receive at least two nominations.

Ford could become a contender for supporting actor, while his costar Jason Segel could receive a nomination for lead. While Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Bornstein may return with their fifth nominations for “The Marvelous Mrs. Masiel,” Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein could also return for their third consecutive nominations for “Ted Lasso.”

“Ted Lasso’s” Phil Dunster could also join Goldstein in the supporting category and Schneider hopes both Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingham also receive recognition for their supporting roles.

In addition to the nominations for the new and returning shows, the editors also discuss the possibility of Jenna Ortega and Natasha Lyonne joining the lead actress category.
